Grado 8MZ identity verification

Well,
emailed customer service and they instructed me to ship it back and they will replace it with the right needle.
Now I'll have to wait till christmas (well "Hanuka" actually) to enjoy it.
Not so horrible since I don't have any matching TT or tonearm for it right now. It's intended for my Grado G2 cart, and a certain Thorens TD160 i'm planning to renovate :)

Thanks again for the help!
Niv
Can you report back after you mount it on the TD 160. Curious to know if you get any hum.

odd........the G1 was never suggested to load at 47K.......the paperwork said 10K or above. If it sounds right in your system, then that's the load for it, for you. I could never get mine to flesh out that high.

Thanks, marcmorin. I've seen you post that before, and I certainly believe that was their recommendation. For whatever reason, I do still have excellent sound at 47K.

Actually I have a G1 and an F3E+ in two different systems, both with 8MZ styli. One day when I'm feeling not-lazy I should try both carts in the same system and directly compare them, including trying different loading options. So far I've just been enjoying the two Grados independently.

Correction - My working cartridge is a Grado G-1+

Sadly, My G2 has a dead channel. I'll try and operate on it sometime soon - can't do any harm...

look into the stylus pocket of your G1 and tell me what color the coil wires are. looking into the brown G2, you should see copper coils. Curious which G1+ you have.

that is true. the re-issue of the 8mz comes with a bonded diamond. When the original inventory ran out.......8MZ-v, the request for the stylus was high, and John Grado started having them made again. Or uncle Joe "advised" him to do so. I still have an original 8MZ stylus along with the re-issue, the sonics are the same.

stop by, listen to the 8MR, 8MX, 8MZ........you ain't that far :bigok:

Yeah, I know. I've been meaning to make a visit for a while. I want to get a couple of thrust plates from you too. My wife has had a couple of surgeries in the past month and I'm trying to get a hernia repaired before Christmas.

I have an F1+ on my TD-160, no hum at all. I had thought the arm might be too heavy as well but it seems fine.
I also thought the TP11/16 toneams were too heavy for Grado carts: calculations using the provided compliance value resulted in a resonance frequency slightly higher than 7 Hz. On the HiFi News test record the TP16/Gold/8MZ assemblage scores far better!

An update:

Contacted the vendor - LP Gear - I don't mind saying it now, since bare the first mistake - Their service was just great.
They asked me to send it back and get a refund/replacement - as I preferred.

I've asked for a replacement and it was sent to me.

It all took some time, me being in Israel, and all this happening through a NYC friend, who acted as a mail forwarded, but I just got it - perfect Christmas gift to myself

Here it is:

And here is the 8MZ tip:

Now all I need is a suitable turntable - neither of my regular tonearms are matching

Thanks again, everyone, for the support and help.
And merry Christmas!

A Christmas gift for someone in Israel...?

I guess that makes sense, since it all started there.

going back to the original photos of your stylus and this one, you can see the finer cantilever with the full coating and "blob" , the diamond is much smaller with a different (deeper) cuts across front and rear to provide much more relief. Merry Christmas
