I have an MF3 sans stylus. Marc Morin tried to explain it to me , but I didn't understand. Is it a good or bad combo?

What don't you understand Your Grado is a good middles of the road Grado and adding the 8MZ stylus would take it up a couple of notches. In other words you grado now is on the same level as say a Grado blue. it probably will sound different than say a new Blue but still good just the same. stop worrying and listen to the music and let your ears decide what is good and bad. Cause ya no opinions are like a..holes, we all got em.............

OK......we'll start over, because you must have missed my sense of humor in another thread. Grado's have always been known for their midrange. Even the lowly $13.00 FTE+1 from the mid-seventies would embarrass expensive carts in the midrange. The issues with the MF-3 you have, even with a new original stylus are below 40hz, and above 10-12Khz......in between that the MF-3 plays fine. The 8MZ stylus will take the bottom definition down to about 25hz, it will take the top definition well above the 12Khz. Everything in the middle gets well defined and placed. The sound stage will get bigger, there will be more room between the instuments etc etc etc. Frankly buying a stylus for a lab series Grado, and not buying at least the 8MZ stylus...to me.....is a waste of money.

marcmorin,

What is your assessment of the Grado F1+ and the 8MZ combination? :scratch2:

I don't have an F1+........I have a G1+. Close enough?:smoke:

Those days, the rock on the end of the upper level Lab Series carts was better than what is offered today on the Silver and Gold. The newer multi segmented cantilevers are better though. The F1, like the G1 will have 700 ohm motors. I'm not sure of the coil configuration on the F1. The G1 has silver coils. I have swapped out the G1 stylus and used the Z2+ stylus in it. Sounds pretty much the same (the Z2+ is nude mounted like the G1+) I like the sound (stage) of the older bodies to that of the Z series and prestiege series. The G1 stylus in the Z2 body sounded just like the Z2. The 8MZ stylus in either the G1 or the Z2 body is an improvement. As I said, I prefer the presentation of the older bodies compared to the newer bodies. Putting the Z2 stylus into my Signature 8 bodies (one is 8MZ body) was a backwards move.

Good enough to take an excursion into 8MZ stylus land!!!

Thanks for the explanation, marcmorin! :thmbsp:
