Great "Every Day Carry" knives

I have one of the Benchmade fighting knives similar to the Griptilian but it does have a safety lock. It is an awesome knife that I really enjoy carrying and using.
I have been to the Benchmade factory and have seen their operation. Everything they put in those knives is made at the factory. Great craftsmanship and pride of product and nation.
 
I use this Camillus hook blade and will never have a straight blade again, I also attached the rope to the end to make it easy to remove out of my pocket when I got leather gloves on.

I keep mine in that little stash pocket that's by the right pocket in most jeans. It's the only thing in there and doesn't get hung up on anything :thmbsp:
 
I EDC a Leatherman Wingman. It's saved my butt a number of times, and does everything I want it to. I have no complaints about it, other than the scissors are completely useless. Not that expensive, the first one lasted two years (and by that time, it was starting to fall apart and corrode) before I finally lost it. Bought another the next day.

I also have a CRKT Drifter that comes in handy at times, too.

I tried that too. For me, keeping anything in that pocket is quite uncomfortable, and the knife did not fit anyways. If I hooked the clip on the pocket the knife would squirt out if I kneeled down to pick something up, and if totally inside that pocket I could not get it back out to use it.
 
I too have trouble carrying a knife,seems like my pockets are never strong enough.Liked the KY story,having a history to share is awesome.
 
Well crap! I had another scary incident exactly like the one I mentioned a few posts back. Actually, tonight was the second such incident since that post. In all three incidents I was wearing jeans and the blade opened as I was removing the knife from my pocket. It has never happened when I am wearing dress pants.

As much as I like the Mini Griptilian, I find these incidents to be too dangerous to continue to carry the knife while wearing jeans. The next time could very easily result in a serious injury to me or someone nearby. I may keep the larger one but the smaller Mini Griptilan is either going back to Cabella's to be exchanged for something with a manual safety lock or will stay at home when I wear jeans. In either case, there is another EDC knife in my near future.

I will be looking again for an EDC knife with a <3" folding blade that is easy to carry in my pocket, has a manual safety lock OR a design that will not allow similar incidents to those that I mentioned, and yet can be opened with one hand. The Benchmade Mini Barrage is on my radar and I am going to go back and read the entire thread again now. I will appreciate suggestions in addition to those that have already been mentioned.
 
Thanks Ray! That looks really nice. I will be sure to check it out. It looks like there is a safety lock of some sort on the back of the handle. Is it actually a locking mechanism the must be depressed before the blade will unfold or is it simply the back edge of the blade that gives the blade a bit of a push start?

It's a standard lockback type knife. It doesn't lock closed but it's one that takes effort to get it started open.
 
My big brother gave me a Swiss Army knife when I was a Sr. in HS. Carried it every day for 20 years until it literally wore out. My wife gave me a new one which took it's place. I don't leave the house w/o it.
 
I've been carrying a full sized grip nearly daily for several years, occasionally changing it up for an Emerson CQC-7.

I was just having a conversation with the girl about EDC knives as she's starting to think she needs one. After letting her handle a few of mine I think she's becoming a Griptilian fan too.

My only complaint with the Grip is I'm not a fan of the scale material, it is functional but a little downmarket looking. Had I known I'd love the Grip as much as I do I'd have probably got it with an uprated steel not the stock 154CM and some aftermarket G10 or micarta scales. At the time I bought Benchmade had a REI special edition which had G10 scales and I want to say a S30V blade, I should have just coughed up the ducats for that one.

Edit: the Doug Ritter version has M390 steel which is one not available with Benchmade's custom configurator, FYI.

Are you carrying the knife tip up with the spine of the blade against your rear pocket seam? That's how I carry and have never had an incident like you describe. Also real easy to deploy when carried like that in your RF pocket.
 
Yes, that is how I carry it. Note that the knife does not open while it is in the pocket of my jeans, thank God! It only opens as I am removing it from my pocket. I believe that one of the thumb studs is catching on the rolled lip / top seam of my pocket. I have not experienced the problem while wearing dress pants that do not have a rolled lip / top seam.

I am half way through the day today carrying the full size model while I am at work in my dress pants. I have taken it out several times just to see what happens. No trouble so far but it I am aware that it is in my pocket and can feel it all the time. The smaller version was much more comfortable to carry. Of course I also had to carry a tourniquet and a first aid kit with me. :rolleyes:
