Gregg Allman - RIP

I had posted in another thread earlier when I took a break from my house reno and heard the news... In my 53 years I have chased exactly 2 bands (not grateful dead like, just saw them if playing within 150 miles) ZZTop and the Allmans. I love that band, have vinyl, CD, MP3s and live shows when they started selling CDs at the show. Greg will be missed.

When I got back to work I cranked up bertha and played my mint filmore live record and later toasted Mr Allman in a proper southern fashion. I loved growing up in the era in which I did, but damn, it sucks watching your icons go down...

PS, the sign next to the Pearly Gates says 'Now appearing, ABB' .... given that they have Duane, Barry, Butch and Greg....

I always considered this album a great sleeper. I still play it a lot. If you can find an early Capricorn label pressing it is a nice quality recording too.

RIP Gregg. Thank you for the great music.

I never had the pleasure of seeing Gregg live. My image of him comes from the inside cover of the album Laid Back - in vivid blue clothes and turquoise jewelry, blonde hair streaming down, with that foxy brunette, both up on beautiful horses out in the woods. Timeless.

I was lucky enough to have seen Gregg with the Allman Brothers on a couple of occasions, including the "Walk On" of the Brothers at the Dickey Betts & Great Southern show in Central Park which led to their reunion in the 70's after a hiatus. I had to drop Stormy Monday from the Fillmore East into the cdp & crank it up in memory of one of the seminal musicians in American music.

If you were going to pick one, that is a peach!

Man am I gonna miss Gregg... His music is what started all this...along with Skydog, Oak, Dickey B. and the gang. Noone made music like that...I came upon it in almost mystical fashion. Was meant to love it. Saw many, many shows... SO many great memories of our crew with The Allmans cuttin' loose... Maybe seeing his funeral on the internet made it all real. Can't believe that golden voice is silenced. He gave us everything he had...time to see Big Bro, Reddog, Berry, Twiggs and Bill Graham, etc... The Road Goes On Forever

I remember that show well....3 carloads of us drove down from Jersey on Friday afternoon, and set up our campsite near the RR tracks. Sometime after dark, the police showed up and told us we`d have to move to the other side of the tracks, so we scrounged up a wooden pallet, and put our campfire on top of it, and carried the fire with us (!) to the new site. Saturday was scorching hot, around 105 degrees, but The Dead soldiered on, playing for hours. I think it was right around dusk when The Brothers took the stage..

I too was there at RFK. IIRC, they played two days with the Dead and the ABB alternating between the days who would play in the hot sun and who played in the evening. I think I went to the gig where the ABB played in the heat of the day and the Dead later that evening. It was one of several great RFK shows back in the day, another being the Stones and Stevie Wonder.

I stopped in to Rose Hill to say goodbye on Monday. I was pretty depressed for a few days after his death.
