Guy Clark RIP

Just saw that Guy Clark passed. A true original, one heckuva singer/songwriter, and a purt' good guitar maker, too.

Probably best known to the world at large for "L.A.Freeway" and "Desperados Waiting For A Train", Guy's crowd included Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle and many others. His wife Susannah, an artist and songwriter in her own right, passed in 2012.

Rest easy, Guy...maybe now you can meet up with Townes and give him that smack upside the head you talked about.

Happy trails,
Larry B.

One of my favorites:

Ain't nothin' in the world that I like better
Than bacon & lettuce & homegrown tomatoes
Up in the mornin' out in the garden
Get you a ripe one don't get a hard one
Plant 'em in the spring eat 'em in the summer
All winter with out 'em's a culinary bummer
I forget all about the sweatin' & diggin'
Everytime I go out & pick me a big one
Homegrown tomatoes homegrown tomatoes
What'd life be without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money can't buy
That's true love & homegrown tomatoes.

(I'd post a YouTube link, but the only available one's pretty bad)

Happy trails,
Larry B.

I learned of Guy's passing while having my morning coffee. We saw Guy and Verlon do a show for a PBS program called "Jamming at Hippie Jack's" a few years ago in Nashville. Guy was in a wheelchair and could barely walk to his chair on stage. They did a nice show and the video might be available. He and Shawn Camp wrote a beautiful song called Magnolia Wind. It is a beautiful love song that stirs me deeply.

I will miss Guy. He wrote many songs that became part of the sound track of my life.

Several of my favorite "unofficial live" (ie, ROIO) recrodings are of Guy Clark. His performance @ The Ark, Ann Arbor (Michigan) @ 1 December 2007 is among the best.

I used to hear Homegrown Tomatoes all the time on local radio when I was a kid. My dad looked and looked for a 45, but never could find one. He finally found the LP of "Better Days" and bought it for the song. Great LP I have in my collection now.

A fun number and an excellent LP.

I had the privilege of seeing Townes Van Zandt & Guy Clark on a double bill at The Bottom Line here in NYC. An excellent show, sad that they are both gone now. RIP.

Must'a been a good one. Was it in 1990? I have a ROIO of Townes, Guy, and Robert Earl Keen performaing together @ Boulder, Colorado @ 1990. Trio of Texan Troubadours.
