GW find- JBL Decade L36's! pics.

After no decent finds in a long time I made a quick stop and was greeted by a pair of JBL logos. Decade L36' s in great shape. Foam is good shape. Grey- possibly a refoam. All drivers work and the cab's look very good- real wood here! Grills are in great shape. :banana:

Anyone have crossover schematic? Time to re-cap these babies.

L 36 info

WOW! Lot of speaker for $10 and so clean. I've had mine since 1977 and use them daily. Good for you.

Mine are like the ones in the attached photo. Included a couple of tech pieces for you. Enjoy.

Yeah, it was lucky. Lots of BPC is the normal fare. But sometimes a pearl can be found of you chuck enough oysters. :yes:

Do you think these may have been re-foamed? I would not expect late 70's foam surrounds to make it this long.

Do you know of any crossover improvements for the L36's? I found the Troels schematic for the L26's.
 
I think they have been refoamed -- looks like the inner edge of the foam has a yellowed glue line in the 2nd photo. The foam will last 15 years -- so I don't think that is the original.

Can't help you with any crossover improvements -- mine are the originals. You'll probably have to turn the Presence and Brillance pots back and forth a couple of hundred times (well, maybe only 50) if they are produce static when adjusted -- that can clear them. I make it a habit to run my through their full range each year.
 
I'm not so sure. Try poking at the roll with your finger, if the surround is healthy you should not be able to damage it with your finger.

Never such "pearls" at my local thrift stores - too many pickers who know what to look for. Just sold a pair of L36's I bought from their original owner, these look even cleaner, if that is possible.

Once I recapped and killed the boom and sizzle a bit (mids and tweeters at -2.5 and open cell foam in the ports to approximate the sound I was getting from my 240Ti's) I thought the Decades sounded very good. I used Jantzen Standards bypassed with Thetas.

I did

bypass all three. I may have drunk the Kool Aid, but what the heck - soldering is fun. I used 0.01uF.

PS - You probably already know this, but its good opportunity to clean the pots as well. My L36s were very clean and the pots didn't "crunch" across their range, but they did have one noisy spot where they had been set for... decades. The pair had different brands of pots, one with Alps and the other Culver Electric. Forget which was which, but the cover of one brand came off easy, the other took some prying and bending of tabs. A quick wipe with Deoxit got them both silent again.
 
Caps are on order. Cleaned them and then applied Howard's Feed N Wax. These are ready for the showroom. Recommendations on cleaning the grills? Plastic framed ones I just dunk in warm water with some laundry detergent. Not sure about dunking the wood frames.
