Had a 17hr emergency room visit Monday Morning!

Had a bad scare with my wife Monday Morning. At about 2:00a.m. she woke up with her heart racing. She woke me up and we called for ambulance as it would not stop. They took her immediately as her heart rate was up to 178 then would drop to 140. It was bouncing all over the place. Her heart was in A FIB and it took quite a while to get it down. They finally gave her Metoprolol which brought it down to a lower level. Her heart eventually fixed itself is what the Dr said. They monitored her for 6 hrs as her blood pressure was a bit high which finally went down. They said they were watching for changes in blood pressure for a possible blood clot forming, which can cause a stroke. They ordered an outpatient EKG and put her on a low dose aspirin a day along with the Metoprolol, in which she can not immediately stop as this will put her at risk of a heart attack. Dr said that her A FIB usually happens at an older age and they could not pin point the reason for it.
She seems to be alright but is very tired, and the Dr would not give her an off work order, so she returned to work today. I told her to screw going but she insisted. Her boss told her to take the day off at least but she is so stubborn, but now, she wishes she did not go.

Thanks for reading!

I hope she came home & took it easy...There's times to be a stubborn "Hero" & times NOT to be one...Sounds like this is the latter..

Glad she's better. Dehydration can cause an irregular heartbeat. So lot's of water and no caffeine sounds like a good idea for a while.

I had a similar heart problem. High pulse rate and atriel vibulation caused by hyper thyroid.

My thyroid got nuked and now I take the synthetic thyroid hormone.

Thanks for the replies. Dr's also said dehydration could have caused it and too much caffeine, but ruled that out. Dr's also said that this will more than likely happen again but with the meds, it should not be as severe. They were even talking about about possibly haveing to shocking her heart to get it corrected. We are waiting for her Dr to send a referral to a Cardiologist (spelling) so we can hear their opinion of what the cause was.

Hi Sandy, I agree completely agree, but she is a dedicated employee and absolutely hates not knowing what is going on at work. She wanted me to bring her laptop to the hospital so she could work from there, but I did not.

Holy Cow! That would scare the heck out of me. Glad to hear she is doing better. I can't imagine WAITING 17 hours in an emergency room with those symptoms.:wtf:

Thank you. She was being tested and tested and tested the whole time, lots of blood taken, lots of monitoring, trying to pinpoint causes but to no avail. I do think they finally gave up on trying to find the cause before they gave her the medication to stop it. She was so uncomfortable and freaked out. Answers did not come until they gave her the meds, 11 hrs into it. The one thing that we didn't understand is why they didn't just do the EKG then. Why they decided to send her to have it done on a later date.

They were in the ER for 17 hours not the waiting room....I work in a trauma center,
chest pain and a fib get immediate attention.

My daughter went to the ER a few weeks back at the direction of a substitute doctor at her regular doc's office. Four hours, an ultrasound on one kidney, and a prescription for antibiotics.

They must have known I have $5000 deductible on our health insurance. The bill was $4988.00

Glad that she is better. Heart issues are very scary. All my best and my prayers go out to your wife and you.

OUCH! We are fortunate as we have a $10.00 co-pay for anything as my wife works for a hospital. When I was single, insurance wasn't even in my considerations to have. Money went to party's and stereo stuff. I am sure glad we have it now.

Hope your daughter is doing well!

Thank you JBL GUY for your kind wishes and prayers!

Just received a call from her Dr. They did do an EKG on her yesterday. I was confused. They had ordered an Echo-cardiogram on her to see if anything is wrong with her heart valves. She goes first thing in the morning and her Dr. is going to see if she needs a referal to Cardiology once she gets the results. Dr. said that if there is nothing wrong with her valves then there is nothing to worry about as it wont be life threatening, just uncomfortable at times. Easy to say!

Thank you all for your support. I will let you know the outcome of the Echo.

man that is scary. Get some more checks done. My wife has a condition that causes the same symptoms. She has had her heartbeat over 200 a couple times, which means a hospital trip. The doctors say it is fixable, but she is too paranoid to let the doctors work on her. It is supposedly an out patient procedure. If you want any info on what she has (may be similar) feel free to PM me.
good luck

Glad to hear that Mrs. dnpainting is doing better. A similar thing happened to a co-worker at my office. The symptoms were almost exactly what you describe: fast pulse rate with high BP. It turned out that the cause of the event was a medication that was accidentally skipped. If your wife is on other prescription medications, you might look into whether it's possible that she skipped a dose or took a double dose. I know it seems obvious, but thought it worth mentioning. Hope it all turns out well.

Thank you! We thought of that as well. She is really good with her meds but you never know.

She just got home from work and is still having heart flutters.

Grillebilly: any information you want to share would be great. The Dr's are so blank when it comes to information. You have to dig for anything and they try to give you as little as possible. Hopefully after the echo, and a visit to her own Dr. our minds will be put at ease.
