Hafler Power XL-280 Amp & Pre Amp DH-110 Restoration

I these two units that are both in working order, I am missing one rca jack for the tuner input on the DH-110, anybody know of a suitable part on mouser? Also looking to possible replace a few caps or resistors or small mods to bring these back up to spec. From my experience with these they sound decent together, the amp has plenty of power yet compared to my old rebuilt Harman Kardon Citation 16 & 17 Lacking in detail and smooth handling. Compared to low powered receivers Marantz 2216b and Fisher 400 these just aren't anywhere near as musical Its easy to get board of listening to the Hafler gear. Any thoughts to smooth out the harshness on this gear would be great Im not looking to go to crazy replacing and modding stuff with this gear though.

there should be no harshness with either piece if they are in proper condition.

I upgraded my Hafler gear with Musical Concept kits. They are local in my town and John is a good guy to talk to about Hafler. I replaced the power supply completely and also the amp driver boards and rcas. My amp sounds much better than stock with his kits installed. Look him up (google seach) and see what you think. The kits are proven, John is an excellent engineer, and has been doing this work since the 70's.

If you just want to recap and replace the rcas then you will have to put together your own parts list and find suitable replacements at Parts Express, Mouser, Digikey, etc

thanks for the reply bobins. I have checked out the musical concepts page in the past its good to hear they are as good as they sound. Unfortunately im not looking to put that much into the amp. Im just trying to find out some of the usual suspect parts to replace to bring this thing up to par and maybe how to modify the amp to be able to adjust the DCoffset and possibly quiescent current

Sounds like you are looking for the POOGE chronicles from Walt Jung. Published in the 80s, they were published in Audio Amateur now known as Audio Xpress. Old Colony Sound Lab provided parts and kits.

Otherwise, consider the eBay recap kits.

Cheers,

David

I've replaced one RCA connector on my Hafler DH-220. The Mouser part is http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/CUI/RCJ-023/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMs8jstQXqv0ybkzWtfdem3n/J6oTKX3vPM=
These work but extend further out than the originals; I've found those connectors on the DH-110 to be pretty flimsy. Agreed that the recap kits from eBay seller qua-co are convenient http://www.ebay.com/itm/HAFLER-DH-1...577133?hash=item568c82e96d:g:lywAAMXQ01tRO2Gl. I also got the transistor kits for my DH-200 and they worked well. Don't know what qua-co might have for an XL-280. Good luck with the repairs.
