Haiku

The fry has well-grown
Journey upstream has begun
Life begins again.

OK. Anyone want to try another Japanese format of Japanese poetry?
Think of it as a next level belt in the martial arts.

This poetic format is called the Tanka. ("short song" circa 800AD)

The poem has five lines, but with a single thought (one sentence) running through it.

The syllable scheme is 5/7/5/7/7

Themes used to be about nature, but that was a long time ago. Anything applies today!

I thought that this might break up the simpler "Haiku", but they can still be written.

I'll dig up an example and share, unless someone wants to wade in.

True in the orthodoxic sense, but unless you have background in some aspects of the Japanese culture, some concepts are not part of the Western mindset.

So, a liberal application was sought in this thread. Writers need practice and experience before they can operate within the confines wherein these formats need to be followed. So, this is where a certain laxity of (subjects/interests/backgrounds) is written about before going further into what would be considered typical of Japanese restrictive rules to be followed.

Like any art, it takes time a patience to develop higher skill levels...again much like in the martial arts.

A good point you made, but if you go back even to the start of this thread, some of the skills are being refined, even without rules/regulations that are followed in traditional Japanese poetry.

This was just to be a free wheeling whack at the bat, and do some writing (Haiku) for the sake of it.

I do appreciate your input. Perhaps sK, you might share a Tanka with us?

Take care in these trouble times,

Flowers Slumber

Blessed flowers wait
till winter's frigid breaths cease
and gloomy skies clear
giving way to sunny light
blues that rule once more.

Pathetic:rolleyes:...but off the cuff on my part.

I write a tanka
It is so lame and awkward.
It needs some real skill
And a graceful flow as well
When it's read it lacks feeling.

Distant mountains rise
faded, small in the distance,
not yet majestic,
saving their full strength
for closer observation.
