Happy July 4th to you tomorrow, and one question?

Happy July 4th to all Americans tomorrow, from rain soaked Wales.

My question is, is this the United States's most revered holiday, Independence Day excluding Religious Holidays, (as this may contravene the rules)? I was under the impression it was.

We obviously don't have that holiday, but Labour Day has always been the day I revere most.

As far as I know: Yes!

And Happy July 4th to all Americans from totally rain soaked Black Forest. (Rain seems currently pretty unevenly distributed in the western world...)

I would say so. Fireworks, lots of summer food BBQ Ale and such.
Going to be nice this year in the 90s. Gotta like that on the lake

Greetings back at yas, from rain-soaked Seattle. Yes, it's raining now, and has been off & on for a few days, like normal. ;) I'm not so sure the 4th of July is a "revered" holiday, so much as it's just a good excuse for everyone to carry on like a buncha idjits. :D I mean sure, most of us bow our heads & remember our country's history for 5 or 10 seconds, but mostly it's about getting drunk & eating too much, & trying not to get killed, setting off dangerous fireworks, or any number of other foolish summertime activites. :D

I moved here 10 years ago from SE London, and it always amazes me how many people have to work on this "holiday". My wife works in healthcare, and she has to work tomorrow and take a day off elsewhere. No extra pay, no day and a half off, nothing.

When I worked in London, we would always get the hols off (not the 4th obviously). I have to explain to Americans what Boxing Day is, and they all think it is a good idea to have another day off after Christmas Day. Then of course, if Christmas follows or precedes the weekend, you get a four day weekend. And that's not even getting started on the flexi-time where I used to work, where you accumulated hours to get a day off.

Lee.

P.S. Nice Cossie in your avatar? Yours?

Revered, 4th of July. Most anticipated, probably Memorial day due to in many area's ushering in summertime, end of school and always landing on a Monday. Plus, it's three months past Presidents day if February - people are ready for another holiday

Only get Christmas off where I work. retail. places are starting to more and more stay open on those days it seems.

We may not have Boxing Day but many places have sales on the 26ths. not quite the black friday of sales but rather good

Well yeah it's a really great Holiday. :thmbsp:

And you get to fight off an invading armada of alien spaceships too... :D

Oh yea!

Not just the pure celebration of the birth of this great nation of ours but all the good and decent things that it has given us United States citizens, specifically our.....FREEDOM!

GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.!

Happy 4th of July eveyone!

Bogle, probably Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veteran's Day and Labor Day are revered as secular, strictly US national holidays. Many other holidays have a religious background or are internationally celebrated.

I'm just glad we can now count Great Britain as a friend and ally.

One of my favorite questions to ask American's - "Do they have the 4th of July in Great Britain?" The answer is of course, yes, but many Americans so equate Indendence Day with the 4th of July they answer "no."

Greetings from the (former) colonists :-)

It's hard to say which is most revered as a holiday. It seems to be human nature to celebrate everything by getting drunk and blowing **** up. That said, it almost has to be the fourth of July. Take a good dry month out of the summer and light explosives. Evolution is slow indeed.

"Most revered" would be tough to nail down to just one. The 4th is certainly a big one, mostly due to its cultural significance of course, but also because it's the biggest mid-summer party holiday.

As far as purely emotional weight, I'd have to put Veteran's Day right there with it. All the men and women who gave their lives to help protect the freedoms that Independence Day created.

The two sorta go hand-in-hand for me.

"Leaving Texas, 4th day of July,
Sun so hot, the clouds so low,
the Eagle filled the sky"

You could not write that about anything else. So the answer is yes. The 4th still retains a certain genuine vibe without being tacky or jingoistic.

And all that beer...:thmbsp:
