hard time finding proper fitting replacement tweeter

Swap the wires first! I had this on my DCM TF-700's. I had to replace the midranges and the originals were no longer available. I found one with a similar spec made by another manufacturer. I wired them up the same polarity as the original (according to the marking on the terminal) and they sounded really weird and when I swept it I found that there was a peak at one frequency. When I swapped the polarity on the midrange, it was nice and flat.

ill try a swap first, I just assumed bad things happened if you hooked up the polarity for drivers wrong

Nope, can't hurt anything. In the case of the midranges I used, they were marked wrong.

eureka I think the polarity swap did it. I just did one and compared it to the other and felt like the swapped polarity one give away more mid high end frequencies and shared more fairly. Didn’t sound harsh anymore like the other new tweeter without the swapped polarity. Sounds more cohesive and unified, balanced like how they sounded originally.

I was wondering if I should fill the old holes from the original tweeters though?

Yes, fill them with wood putty.
