Have altec VOTT, but girlfriend says no

My first house me and my girlfriend (now my wife) moved into was only 800 square feet. She let me have two sets of Cerwin Vega D-9's. Now they are not as big as those Altec's but she still let me have them. She put doily's on the top with ornaments ect on them. They doily's ect would have to come off when I cranked the tunes or they would fall off but I was ok with that. We have been married 20 years. I sold one set about 10 years ago and the other set I sold to a friend that has a nice garage. I now have two sets of Paradigm 9se mk111 that I feel sound a lot better than the D-9's. I don't have any advice for you regarding getting rid of your speakers. I would try talking to her again and tell her how important the speakers are to you.

Look there's no piece of any gear I've ever salivated over worth anything close to having a great relationship with the right woman. Period.

Getting that relationship right is always first and foremost. It's amazing how the other things work themselves out as a part of discovering what makes each other tick and all the little surprises, joys and sometimes strains that work out to make you both closer.

To me it's not about your dream speaker but if she's potentially your dream woman. Only you know that and only by being honest with yourself about her "warts and all" as they say will make your decision the right one for now. As all relationships evolve or die of boredom there are always surprises and joys to discover that will make any piece of gear pale in comparison. IF you are with the right woman.

And there are never any guarantees for that. The best you can do is weigh the information you have in front of you at this moment for how well you gel as partners in life that can provide any indication how well that might work out later.

Good Luck!!!

And I've never had a woman ask that I give up something that she knew was important to me.

The way I see it....if she is the girlfriend now and not letting you have your "toys". What if she becomes your wife?

Halo does have a point there. See what she says about some Model 19's if you get a larger place. They are more eye friendly. If she says no way.....run away!

The OP is moving into his GF's apartment. She said no to VOTTs, but yes to Valencias. It is her apartment, not his.

That is a fair compromise. For many of us, we search for a lady for who we will willingly sacrifice, and compromise, for. If you can find someone you want to marry, raise a family with, and be a partner to for the rest of your life, AND she says yes to Valencias, that sounds like a pretty good catch to me. They actually are better speakers than VOTTs.

I would let her know that you will always have a guy room, with speakers that she can't move to vacuum under, and that you expect your collection will grow rather than shrink, up front, so you two can quickly find out if she is comfortable with that direction. Deception, poor communication, and outright lieing are poor grounds to build a good relationship.

I guess I'm lucky. My wife never complains about my speaker addictions. Right now I have a pair of Polk SDA's and a pair of Infinity RSIIIa's sitting in our den that I am AB'ing.

To give a totally accurate and non-subjective opinion, we'll need you to post two pictures: of the speakers & of the gf. :D

Kidding aside, I haven't read all the posts yet, but if she did say OK to Valencias' she's sacrificed enough I think. If you really cherish those VOTT, put them in storage or someone's garage if you have a good friend or parents around.

Just to give you a different perspective, from her side: you're basically not willing to sacrifice your speakers for her comfort - just as you think she's not willing to sacrifice her space for your desire.

Understood - my wife (partner of 18 years) has been very forgiving of a lot of my speaker madness. I've had big blue JBL studio Monitors and other stuff.
Plus, we have both suffered through some real assholes in previous relations and now we know what's important.
Love and trust and joy is important - speakers can be replaced.

Also understand that a pair of huge grey Altecs Theater speakers
(yes, they are not home but THEATER speakers, they are Industrial and they are UGLY)
is pushing beyond the far edge of the envelope for home speakers.
Its kinda like wanting to keep a Harley inside the house.
Not unreasonable in some circles, but not real civilized otherwise.

How much do you care for her?
Speakers can be replaced ...

No. It WAS her apartment it is now THEIR apartment. She is not letting him move in because he has no where else to go. He is not a roommate or a buddy that she is doing a favor for. They are both choosing to live together. As far as the VOTTs go, IMO they are way to huge to be a good idea in any apartment that I have lived in. I don't have an issue with her not wanting them in the apartment.

It doesn't sound like she is demanding he get rid of them forever, just not in the current living situation. Seems totally reasonable to me.

No Tebbie, it was her apartment, and it is her apartment. He is the boyfriend, but is a guest who is not on the lease.

If she tells him two weeks down the road to get out, he has to get out. If he tells her to move out, she can laugh at him. Big difference.

As I noted earlier, Valencias are easier on the ears, and easier on the eyes as well. If she says no VOTTs in her apartment, as she has so clearly communicated, then it is time to get with the program, or become a free agent.

That is a HORRIBLE way to look at it and a HORRIBLE way to start a life together. In relationships mindset is everything, and tbh yours seems very toxic. It is also making assumptions about the state of the lease. Everyplace that I lived if a "guest" was living there longer than 30 days then they MUST be added to the lease.

If I was in your shoes, I would NOT sell the speakers that you clearly enjoy. I would find a place to store them since your gf doesn't like them. Nobody can see the future. Who knows what's coming down the road. You may be able to use the Altecs as a negotiating tool in the future. Example: GF wants to buy a house. You say sure as long as I can have my music room or man cave for all my equipment and those Altecs currently in storage. IMO: Don't make a hasty decision you will always regret and blame the gf for in your mind.

Sell them, and buy a set of Klipschorns (smaller than you think as they fit into corners). Klipschorns love tube amps!

They look very "Art Deco" to me. Industrial finishes have their plus sides too.

Plenty of stuff has multiple uses...home & other. Kitchen Aid mixers aren't super stylish, but the design is classic.
