Have people gone nuts?

tag line

It does seem that prices are spiking. It could be a rebirth of audiophile.
Kids discovering that MP3 isn't the best music source.
Baby boomers reliving some of the past.

My gear was shelved for years while "life" got in the way.
Not everyone could hang onto their stuff all those years.
My Marantz 2275 was bought in 1975, that is 35 years ago.
People "loose" a lot in 35 years.

There are/were some CL listing around here that were/are pretty darn high.

They aren't making this stuff anymore....

Oh, and, YES, people are nuts.
:thmbsp:

eBay is the only true indicator of market value (if sales are legit).
Neither brother-in-law garage sale score, nor neighhbor donation, nor thrift store, nor Marantz turntable tree on the back yard qualify. These sales are totally irrelevant.

Comparison these classics to modern turntables is plain rediculous (my Civic runs faster than that antique car that was sold for $1 mil. And has cruise control too).

Condition is everything. I assume these TT are in "collectible" condition, so just multiply "regular" price by 3 or 5 or even 10.

And yes, they don't make them any more (supply). Some people want them in great collectible condition (demand).

A lot has to do with location. It has been commented that good stuff around here "just falls out of the sky". Yard sales and thrift stores have produced a ridiculous amount of good stuff since I started back into this about a year ago. I've found things I never thought I'd ever see in person. You must live near a "mine" also. And yet, I am jealous of some here that seems to find even more than I do. There are some honey holes out there.

Remember, there is a LOT of places that do NOT have thrift stores or the thrift store does NOT EVER get good gear. Living near a military base or major city has its perks.

There are members here that never find great stuff in thrift stores for $10.

I came from the great empty land of America. I couldn't even get parts for my car or anything else I worked on. It seemed like EVERYTHING needed to be ordered. I worked in a store and felt so tired of telling people I didn't have the thing they wanted and needed but I could order it. I guess we were 2 days from EVERYTHING.

I spent many years going through the thrift stores "out there". There is NOTHING audio in them.

When there is an auction sale or yard sale "out there" and there happens to be "good" stuff. It's like a shark feed. They just don't have the supply. So to them, things seem very valuable.

You need to be happy you can score $10 finds in a TT.

As far as flippers, they do us all a favor (although I hate being scoped by them, but I'm learning that there is a lot more coming and my turn comes). The flippers don't set the price, the buyers do.

The wild part here is the price paid. But some people do NOT want to fix (or can't) and do NOT want worn or beat up.

I think people trying to make a living selling used audio gear on eBay should all be shot for being the pathetic excuses for human beings that they are.

No, wait...

Actually, I don't believe that at all, and I'm more than puzzled by folks who have that opinion. I am, in fact, disgusted by it. All Americans have the right to make an honest living in an honest way. And, if by so doing, the current and correct fair market value for a particular item becomes generally more understood by the buying public, well, then I guess that's what happens.

Fwiw, I agree 100% with the above quotes, which is why "anti-flipper rants" are one of the topics that are absolutely forbidden in D&S.

Carry on.

The best phrase in this thread is, "Marantz tree in the back yard".

Isn't there a Radio Shack turntable that looks just like that Marantz?

Maybe it's a new type of economic equalization?

On one side we have the lowballer's bluebook that says everything is worthless while driving the prices down, and on the other side we have shillBay bringing the prices back up.

They didn't look like any $10 thrift tt I ever saw.Really though these are nice examples of 70s tts.If thats what the market is bearing and headed to more power to the sellers.I am just glad I am already there.
