Good news for dat down because of the RF amp.
After much research I understand that the problem is mainly due to faulty capacitors.
I was able to get my DTC690 back to life by changing the 6 capacitors present on the printed circuit board (maybe they were not all down).
Solder SMD capacitors is very delicate, especially since the new capacitors are a little bigger than the old ones. I solved the problem by soldering the new capacitors after removing their support and straightened the legs, a bit like regular radial capacitors. The soldering is ultimately simpler this way as you have more room for the solder iron.

Don't Overthink It
I just went through this decision process too - what to do about my failed Sony dat decks ( dtc-700 and PCM-r300). I decided not to fix either of these units due to their transport design. I took the money I would have spent fixing those and bought sony's best pro unit - the 4head 4 motor PCM-r700. These are selling for about 1/10th of their new price and are a much more reliable unit. Except for some shoddy packing and a damaged door (bonehead seller) it's a real nice deck.
It's last call for us all in the dat world. Use your decks to transfer your stuff to hard drive now while u still can. None of these decks will last indefinitely.
