The workshop is Boy Wonder's, and he's done all the work on them. I mostly got involved tonight just so that I could be involved a little.
They will be ported, and tuned to the same frequency as the originals, hence the question I posed a couple days ago about port diameter vs. tuning frequency.
The cabinets will be put together tonight, then Bob will go through and sand everything smooth. The finger jointing is something of a trademark of Bob's, as all speakers he has built have been constructed this way. It makes the cabinet exceptionally solid, as you can expect by increasing the bonded surface area manyfold. Previously, he's used an acrylic epoxy as the glue (as he did with the Maggie sub), but this time he's using Liquid-Nails.
Although the cabinets should be finished tonight, there are a couple more details that need to be worked out. The ports, for instance, could not be fit in yet, and will have to be installed later. Additionally, the internal bracing will be installed later- the bracing was designed and laid out in such a way that it can be installed later.
I have to admit that I kind of gasped too when I saw the drivers in the workshop. I'm already resigned to the notion that I will have to dismantle the tweeter to clean the ribbon. I'll have to give them a thorough brush-down when complete.
As far as a finish goes, I'm thinking either a very high-gloss piano black, or a lighter colored veneer. When it comes to it, I plan on putting it to a vote, then arbitrarily doing what I want anyway.
Attached is a pic of the current cabinet. Not a bad cabinet at all- about par for the course in the 1970's, and a little better built then the contemporary JBL L150A, but it was in need of refinishing, plus the bottoms were pretty well shot.
