Headphone extension cable,

I am in need of a 10 to 15 foot extension cable for my AKG K240 Mk II's. I am coming out of the headphone amp on my ASUS Xonar Essence STX sound card and I need more length of cable. I could just build one but can somebody suggest one. My hearing is such that any of the blessed by Saint Vidicon of Cathode (quick name the SciFi series St Vidicon comes from) cables costing hundreds of dollars would do me absolutely no good, but if somebody can suggest either an extension cable. or even a direct plug in to my K240's for less the $100 dollars I am all ears. :D I am more interested in the quality of the cable than any sound enhancement it might be purported to have.

If I decide to build this cable is there anyplace I can get the termination plug used on the AKG K240 cans? :music:

Thanks

Try looking for a Grado Prestige Extension Cable.
I got mine from the mac dealer, 15' 1/4 and came with a mini adapter at less than half of your limit.

I picked up an extension for my Grados at BestBuy or Walmart-I do not remember where-it was relatively cheap and I hear no sound degradation over just using the headphone cord by itself. I am sure longer runs may need heavier gauge but for a shot run I have no problem.

You can order the mini XLR connector from mouser or markertek online.

If so, I'd order up the requisite length of Belden 1800F and build away. In the past Markertek had OK parts prices but higher shipping. In the end though it was roughly six of one, half-dozen of another on total orders of like items elsewhere.

There's some pro dudes in the UK on that auction site that make very nice AKG extensions with the mini XLR to whatever plug/length you want. (no affil)

this is the item number 161086952738 (again, no affil).
Use the link to that auction site from AK's main page and I think AK might make something out of it if you buy one.

Thank you! I was wondering what the connector was called that makes it easy mini XLR connector, and Belden 1800F. I am going to take a look at the Grado Prestige Extension Cable and make a decision. I was trying to listen to My K240's plugged into my Onkyo AVR today and the sound is unacceptable. I have a ASUS Xonar Essence STX on the PC and the on board headphone amp is magical but the PC is located just a few feet to far away from my listening area to be comfortable. :D

Edit: Just purchased the Grado prestige Extension Cable, and the 3.5mm adapter as well from Amazon. I am still going to look into building a cable as well. Thanks to all!!!!!!

Grado Prestige Extension Cable is not XLR it is a 1/4"

Maybe an adaptor for it?

I understand the Grado extension cable plugs into the existing detachable cable on the K240's not directly into the headphones. I have a note off the Blue Jeans Cables about a custom cable from them that will be constructed with 25 feet of Belden 1800F with a mini XLR at one end and a 1/4 stereo plug on the other. Huge fan of BJC.

Ah. You need longer? Grado extension cable is what I'd go with then.

I purchased the Grabo and the 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter cable I have other headphones that I will use it on. .

I received the reply to my inquiry at Blue Jeans Cable. They are making me a 25 foot cable terminated with a mini XLR on one end and a 1/4 stereo plug on the other using Belden 1800F this cable comes in white, black, blue, purple, and green. I am going "green" :D all this for $56 dollars. I Love BJC!!!!

Yeah sounds like a deal and you'll be all set. :thmbsp:

It turns out BJC makes a lot of these extension cables. The AKG K240's are very popular in recording studios with board op's among others and they need longer cables. But instead of Belden 1800F, which is too large in diameter for the mini XLR the proper cable is Belden 1508A. It has been completed and shipped I should have it Monday or Tuesday. :music:

I registered to ask how you like the BJC custom cable. It looks like I'll have to get the same thing.
