I'm from Morocco and have spent most of the time listening to music (and almost all audio when I'm at my desk) through headphones, the ones I always enjoy are a modded Fostex t50rp. I connect them to my PC with a sound blaster XG6 sound card. I also own and have owned some modern entry to medium level home cinema systems, sound bars, etc.
One day I was visiting Barcelona and entered a Hi-Fi shop called warner if I'm remembering well. I was just curious and the owner or manager invited me to listen to some music in a room. I told him no thanks I was just passing by but he insisted, and og my god, that was a changing moment in my conception of audio experience. He played some jazzy songs through some equipment and what I remember is that the column speakers had "Pylon" written on them, and the amp and player were Cambridge. I thought I was in a hurry, but me and also my wife who's not very interested in those things, stayed there listening for almost an hour, almost hypnotized ! The guy was a gentleman and far from seeking to acquire new clients, his main oobjective was clearly to share with us his passion. And indeed, he made me change my mind on many aspects about audio and quality.
At that time, I was only focused on which is the 5.1 next system I should buy, and what's the best 9.1 one, and which dolby, if Atmos or not.. bla bla, the main commercial normal shopper interest. But I discovered that I surely must begin to discover the world of HiFi some day. The idea stayed there, and almost forgot about it since I have a busy schedule in my work.
But here I am, because I found some days ago some audio equipment by coincidence when I was in facebook market and decided to buy it, and then came here to this forum fantastic to learn and discover. I didn't bought those Pylon speakers I heard in Barcelona, neither the Cambridge tubes. My goal is to go slowly and learn for now. So what I bought were a Sansui AU-3900, a Davis Acoustics Dufy bookshelf speakers, and to add some power to low frequencies I added a JBL PB10, which I think are enough for the dimension of my room.
I had some banana plugs that I bought from Amazon long time ago (KableDirect gold plated) and some audio cables too (2x2.5mm OFC made in Germany), and I connected it all with them. I used the Sound BlasterX G6 to listen to audio for PC (don't know if it's a good idea ? or it's better to use the source from the motherboard which is a MSI that has well, some gold audio capacitors on it, or make connection to a better DAC with optical cable etc)
The sound is fantastic, the speakers are so precise and they exell in the medium and HF and also good in bass but they lack a little bit the deeper bass (all what I can expect from a good bookshelf speaker), they're not very known I think since they're rare on the internet but after researching they're a french brand "Davis Acoustics - Dufy HD" , family owned, and they also make drivers, their signature let's say is the kevlar speaker drivers.
The JBL PB10 is doing good, but since I'm new on this stuff I feel always that I must experiment different crossovers and power and test.
The Sansui, is almost new (for me as a newbie haha) since it's working perfectly, no damage, no scratches etc... and when I opened it and also from what I learned here in this forum I think it's always with the original parts (Elna capacitors, Nippon Chemi-con ...etc).
The only little problematic thing for me (I know an expert can detect more) is that when I switch to system A and B to listen to the woofer too, it's not working precisely, I only hear one channel, and I must jiggle with the rotary switch to make it work on both sides left and right).
I think the next step will be recapping it, because as I knew even if the working state is OK, even if for me the sound is very beautiful, but those electrolytic components are less efficient with time... and that's interesting because it means when I recap it, the sound will be hopefully two times better !
I will be here in the forums from time to time, learning, lurking, and sometimes asking. I'm putting the recap project as a challenge. I know general information about audio, nothing of an expert or a technician, but to do work on electronics is a new thing for me, but I'm eager to learn, and I like to do manual things also.
I will post in the future about the recaping, and maybe about any other thing related to this journey.
