Well, the Skodas wern't slouches, either...VW knew what they were doing when they bought Skoda...Skodas actually sold fairly well in Western Europe, before the Wall fell. Guess you can tell, I'm somewhat of a Car Nut....(grin)

Sandy G, they used to sell Skodas in Canada in the 60 and 70s, a small car with a sort of a fast back rear end. They were quite popular for a while.

An interesting fact about Czech (Czechoslovakian) cars is, that the former Soviet union prohibited making and development of bigger engines for Czech cars in favour of Soviet engines. That is why Tatras were the only models with V-8 big engines. All Škodas had 1.0, 1.2 and later 1.3. engines. Many great concepts were also banned by Soviets because the cars would be too much competition for soviet cars. Those were Comecon times!

Probably the Skoda & Tatra engines were far superior to anything the Rooskies had, too..I remember the Soviets tried selling "Belarus" tractors here, starting in the late '70s. Their main drawing card was that they were CHEAP, they certainly weren't anywhere nearly as refined as IH or John Deere tractors..

Tatra´s are legendary cars. The real beauties. They were unafordable for "normal" people. Only communist officials and some very very rich people were actually allowed (and could afford) to buy them.
