Welcome, Ariel! :thmbsp:

You come from a nice place! Some nice gear there, too. I'm just curious: a lot of the Japanese-made gear in the U.S. seems to have been brought back by servicemen posted overseas. Given the history of the military in Guam, is/was there much good vintage gear there? Or has little of it stuck around locally?

Yes, vintage audio gear are still around here but so very very hard to find.

When the good stuff was around (70s & 80s), most houses here didn't have A/C. Due to the salty air, most rusted away. Guam was also hit by devastating typhoons during those years. Many homes were destroyed.

I guess equipment purchased by servicemen stationed here were the lucky ones that got away. Base Military housing are most, if not all, full concrete homes & A/C equipped.

Have a good one!

Hafa A'dai!

Welcome to AK.

Spent two of the best years of my life on the beautiful island of Guam! I was stationed at NCTAMS and lived in Yigo.

Just a fantastic place for outdoor activities, awesome diving!, running, cycling, hiking (boonie stomping), softball, volleyball, golf... man, I miss my old life!!

But, the best part was the people of Guam! In my 20 years of travel in the Navy, they are nicest people I had the pleasure to meet. Fiestas!

Glad you had a blast here. How long ago were you here? I live near NCTAMS, Dededo area.

Guam is getting there. Various stateside shops, dept. stores and restaurants opened up and NO typhoons to ruin the place in a long, long time.

USAF Thunderbirds are here next week performing at the AAFB open house...lookin' forward to that!

Anyways, thanks for the warm welcome.

Welcome to AK!

I was stationed at the (NTCC) Naval Air Station Agana, Guam from 1977 to 1980.

I lived on Tamuning dr in the apartments that are now condos.

I too liked it there, I visited last (while on USS Blue Ridge) in 1983. By that time the island of Guam was becoming too commercial for my liking.

I especially liked going to the underground springs. If you know where that is, then you probably know that back when I was there you had to hike through private property to get there, but it was well worth the trip as it was truly the "fountain of youth"!!!

Also, Sella Seti bay (sp???) was great to look at tropical fish that were so colorful and the infamous coconut crabs and wild boars. I also knew another spring fed stream that had fresh water shrimp that would nip at your feet while you stood in the stream.

A lifetime of memories for sure.

Regards, Ron

Ariel,

If you could, I have a favor to ask of you.

Could you see if the apartments(condos) are still there on Tamuning dr just shy of Marine dr and take a pic of the place to your right after you enter the driveway.

I'm curious if my old apartment is still there. I used to live on the 2nd floor section that was near Tamuning dr but parallel with Marine dr.

It would be a cool trip back in time for me if you can.

Many thanks just for reading this.

Regards, Ron

Don't forget the geckos and the grass that does just like venus fly traps. You can actually see your footprints in the grass when you walk on it.
