I'm new here - was wondering where to start diagnosing a mechanical squeal that accompanys playing a cassette in my Sharp SC-1250. Could grease have dried out (it is 45 yrs old)? Band slippage? It does play the audio fine so it doesn't appear to be in the electronics. Any positive guidance would be greatly appreciated.

If the grease hasn't dried out I expect it to at least be gummy and full of grit.
I would carefully clean and lube, the old plastic can get brittle and anything you use has to be plastic safe. I would also consider replacing the belts, especially if there's a lot of disassembly required. Take a look at them for cracks. You only want to do that once lol.

Thank you very much. I've started trying to find belts for it already but that is proving to be a challenge. I'll get there... I do have the original manual and the complete parts list - documentation was certainly thorough back then... Will report out on it along with a pic or two once I get it done - it was in storage for quite some time; was very pleased to hear outstanding FM stereo music and AM radio coming out of it clean and crisp.
There may not be a branded belt for that model, but if you have the old one you'll be able to buy buy size. Might be in there too. Tape deck belts aren't quite as touchy as others in my experience. If it works it'll work, tension matters but you get some wiggle.
