Help - electro-voice interface b equalizer

Hi
I have been offered one for $50 from a guy in the US.
He is contacting me today re shipping etc.
I will keep you posted on how it goes and the results.

Are there any opinions about these speakers.

They are sounding a little rough, hard.

Any advice

What are you using for an amp?? EV speakers are good quality, specially the Sentry line. Again don't expect a miracle from the EQ box. The speakers are only as good as the rest of your system, sound wise. Me likey high current amps but the Sentry line really doesn't require a ton of power as they are fairly efficient speakers. Also re-capping crossovers will help if need be. My Sentry IIIs didn't improve much at all with new caps but that's probably due to the fact that EV used quality caps to begin with. Not the case with most speakers.

Cheers,
Bob

I have been using 17 WATT Naim integrated, too hard but grips them well and lots of boogie, headache though.

Listened to a mates 15 watt Valve amp and did not control them too well.
It had a lot of quality in the less powerful mode (triode?) 7 watts, quite nice indeed, still underpowered of course.

I am thinking I need 2o to 40 good valve watts to tame and control them well

Some old pics for reference;

Top left is what I have. Seems to work well with the Interface As in my workshop.

jackrinse we have spoken on these... i once owned a pair that i restored myself.. i ran these with two different power sources with great success. i first ran these with a sansui au-999 integrated solid state amp, 75 watts.. of course i did use the crossover box. imho the box did make a difference. the tweeters were way to shouty without the box. second system i ran with these was a pair of heathkit w-5m tube mono blocks. 25 watts conservative rating. the heaths drove these with ease! the soundstage was even better than with the s.s.... they are excellent speakers, they realistically need at least a GOOD 20 watts or better to get them to stretch their legs.

Vynilsfinal, this is indeed the sort of info I am looking for.
I have heard some very promising things from these speakers but the are a bit unruly.
The top end is indeed a little rough and the mid range a little shouty and hard.

I feel they are getting a lot of feedback from the floor also. I am going to try and find some suitable stands to take them off the floor which I believe will clear up the sound a bit.

I have a guy with an Interface B EQ but I am waiting for him to get back to me. He is in the U.S.

I think I will end up with a respectable sound from them.

And BTW 20 watts plus is exactly my thoughts so I am looking for an Valve amp, probably about 40 watts. They all seem low powered until the EL34 and KT88 which all seem to be at about 40w.

Thanks

Jackrinse,

I have the box you're looking for in good working and cosmetic condition - if you are in the US, I'd be happy to let you have it for $20 plus shipping if that sounds fair. Let me know if you still need one.

20 bucks is a steal.

+1 on that. I checked back on what I paid for a NOS still in sealed plastic off ebay and I paid $140 or something like that and that was a few years ago. I use the original SEQ box made for the Sentry III and it makes a subtle difference.

Cheers,

BOb
