Help! I’m picking out my first speakers!

Stands, make em, find em on the bay, find em at a retailer, find apple crates along the side of the road but be sure and make them look nice if you use em. we aren't in our first apartments with limited decorating skills and money.

The originals are hard to come by, and pricey even when you can find them. Here is a picture of my L620's, on original ADS stands. They angle up a bit. I use the L620's for TV audio and the KEF's for music. (That pair needs some work on the grills.)

Amazon has speaker stands in all sizes. Or, just do a search for speaker stands. It all depends on how high up you want them. Top plates on most stands will be much smaller than the speakers that go on them. A little Blu-Tack on each corner will keep them in place. You could really put them on most anything. The just need to be off the floor. (I was using buckets, for a while, for my L710's, before they were displaced by the KEF's :rflmao:).

L710's are nice. If looking at L710's, L780 series 2's are another good option. However, I found the slim towers L1090 / 1290 and M12's easier to place than my L780/2's on stands. L1090's are an even slimmer tower but are definitely less common. My favorite of the smaller bookshelf models seems to be the L520 2-ways. There's something about them that is just right. Plus, they are relatively efficient, at 92dB, so you'll need less power, and they play low (35Hz). I've had good results with these on a vintage 18-watt Sony STR-7025 receiver, among others.

I also started in the 70s with Advents, still have them plus three more sets but there are many who just plain don't like Advents. Those listed in post #24 do not have the original woofers and are vinyl clad. Worth maybe 1/5 of the listed price if the tweeters are good . I use a filter circuit in the amplification stage to mitigate their worst problems, they are a very forward speaker. If you look long enough you may find high quality lesser known speakers at a relative bargain price.
 
After all these suggestions, inquiring minds wonder what you settled on... or at least my inquiring mind does!

Yep, limited power means limited speaker selection. I think 50 watts will do for lots of speakers in that room, but would favor 80.
Get the watts first. Then start running speakers though till you get a hit. Don't forget to sell the duds.
 
Just catch all canned advise, find a pair of used Bowers and Wilkins. Hard to go too wrong with them IMO.
 
Don't rule out Paradigm, and any of the early API speakers (Energy, Mirage, Sound Dynamics, etc.) and some of the speakers from Sound Dynamics and Mirage, pre-API ownership. SD 10s, 12s, 15s, Mirage 350, 450, 550, 650 and 750. I have the 350 and 750 Mirages; the 750's are amazing. Refoaming the 350's this week. Also, don't be afraid of most of the PSB line; all good kit. Happy hunting. Sorry for the Canadian slant. Can't help it!
