help! JBL 4312C distortion noise on left channel woofer.

There actually are several recone kits. That woofer is the 123A (NOT 128H) in white. I ordered two similar ones for the 122A from @edgewound (Upland Speaker Service) but I can't recommend them because it's been almost 5 months and I have not received the parts. Speaker Exchange also has an Aquaplas-simulation for their kit, and you can probably buy paper cone kits such as Simply Speakers sells and weight them with a brush- or spray-on coating if you're careful. Moving mass on the 128H is 90 grams. I would not count on disassembly and reuse for any parts.

BTW - "So What" is an especially bad piece if your woofer is buzzing since it already has some sort of distortion in the recording. I had to play it a few times with known good components before I realized that. But it sounded really terrible on my 122A woofer on one side (left).

(@edgewound, please send me the parts so I can get "So What" playing with only the buzzing that is on the record!)

EDIT: Sorry that is the 123A woofer not the 128H. Otherwise everything still applies though.

@Mr Boochie I have not, sorry. Still untested at reconing but I have done a lot (all?) of the available reading. I would be willing to give it a shot. One concern with that product: It actually doesn't look as white as the JBL color.

When I last checked, real Aquaplas is still sold for marine applications but in 5 gallon buckets that are >$100. I suspect a Home Depot textured paint would work as well.

Just thinking and typing here, but I think the trick would be to weigh the assembled cone and VC + loose dust cover and make up the delta with a coating. The coating would have to be sampled for weight/area after curing and carefully applied with that understanding until you achieved the total mass required.

The tech down at Speaker Repair Pros (in Orange County, CA) --- bought several 5-gallon drums of Aquaplas. He said that it's thicker than the JBL OEM solution --- spraying onto the cones makes for an uneven look after drying.

So he hand painted the stuff onto my 122A-1. 5 coats over 5 days. It came out not-too-bad.

I had the speakers reconed --- due to a poor initial reconing by the original owner --- and the crossovers gone through in Feb 2021.

Although he had to paint the Aquaplas onto the front of the cone, it does not show through the grille, too much. You can just see the woofer at the middle-top of the cab (speaker is upside down for better imaging with the L300).
