Help me identify these speakers

Please help me identify these speakers. No grill cloth, no labels.

One single 5uf capacitor in the crossover. Walnut cabinets, the grill cloth looks like it used to be beige gold coloured.

The previous owner thinks Grundig, but I couldnt find anything!

Man if that’s a big port at the bottom in kinda of a horn configuration and with all that volume I would have picked those up for the cabs alone. Looks like something to try some Seas or Fostex fullrange drivers in. How do they sound?

Most of their stuff did say Grundig on it somewhere, though.

Construction looks like early 70s and there were a lot of small and regional audio companies so who knows. Finding out who made the drivers may be helpful.

I think I see a black and red cap, that suggests American construction I think. Can't guarantee it but I do know a lot of vintage American speakers had em. Of course they could still be Grundig - in fact the Grundig Majestic brand was, I think, specifically made for the States, perhaps made IN the States, again I'm not sure.

The gear stack may be Grundig too, they made tape decks and all kinds of stuff.

They sound very good. Considering their age, I am letting them run for a bit, and use a different amp - at the moment I think the Technics receiver I have them plugged into may be a little under-gunned.

Good eyes! That black capacitor is a 7uf left over after a recap of a KEF 105... it replaced the original 5uf DALY capacitor which was bad (ESR 140 Ohms vloss 21%).

Right. I thought the chevron would be a giveaway too... but no other Grundig emblems. I'll take a closer look at the drivers.

Just connected these to my H/K 730. Great improvement bass response, but the highs still seem too bright for my liking.

Those black and red ones are junk at this point (so goes the conventional wisdom) so I would put another cap in there before passing any judgment on the sound. If it's still too hot with good film caps in it, you can always pad down the tweeter or midrange.

Some pictures of one of the tweeters.

I can remove the woofer, but the voice coil part of the frame is encased in glued on fibreglass, not sure I could see any markings if I wanted to.

There are two markings on the tweeter "DWC9" and "40-35".

Tweeter is very familiar looking, esp. the waffle stamped surround-less cone. I might even have one or two of those sitting around.

Those numbers aren't EIA codes but they likely mean SOMEthing...

A bunch of old Realistic drivers had model numbers starting with 40-. They seemed to have 4 digits after the dash and not two though.

Any numbers on the woofer are likely to be on the back of the magnet cover which you can already see surrounded by fiberglass. If you peel that back so you can see the whole magnet cover and there's nothing there, it's unlikely but possible it will be somewhere else, like on the rear edge of the basket.

I had an old Magnavox console with those dimpled tweeters.

They look a little like Jensen but Jensen was pretty good at putting its code (220) on stuff they made.
