Help me understand a RuneAudio software/Raspberry Pi System

I want to run my DAC from a rasberry pi off of an external hard drive using RuneAudio software.

I think I understand the big picture.

The raspberry pi is connected to my wifi, the hard drive and DAC are connected to the raspberry, RuneAudio software controls the music from my other devices that are connected to the same wifi.

Any other details I need know?

You have the big picture right. The hard drive doesn't necessarily have to be connected to the RPi. It could be connected to your router if it has a usb port.

I just converted my RPi from a music player to a retro game player using retropie. I can quickly go between a music player and a game player by swapping the micro SD card. Now I have an excuse to get a Chromecast Audio dongle. :D
 
I stream audio with an RPi with the Cirrus DAC installed onto the RPi. I don't use any specific software like Rune or one of the XBMC variants out there.

Instead, I use Mplayer and have built a series of simple shell scripts to call up the IP address of the web site's stream to run them. Essentially, I'm using the shell, command line interface. It is a nice reminder of the ways we used to do things before a mouse appeared on my desk some 30 years ago.

As far as a hard drive for ripped CDs, my collection hasn't had one CD added in years since I found enough streaming stations to approximate what I listen to these days.

One more question, I will need a monitor and keyboard to connect to my network, yes? Also, what OS do I use?

You will not need a monitor or keyboard to setup RuneAudio or connect to the network. The first running of RA is ethernet only and it connects automatically to your network. Then you open a browser on your remote computer to http://runeaudio to set up wireless, etc on the RPi.

RuneAudio comes with its own operating system called RuneOS.

Can you use the RPi, (I'm assuming that is the raspberry pi) and stream pandora and/or others?
I'm trying to figure these things out, I know nothing about them, but it may do all I want if I can find the basic info in idiot speak.

Yes, but you have to have a paid subscription.

Quite different in execution. The Chromecast Audio can now do multiroom in perfect sync, not sure if the Pi can do that. :dunno:

No problems on my end. I have 4 of them going total, although the most I have run concurrent is 3. One in the garage, one in the living room, one in my basement, and one in my bedroom.
 
Ah, didn't realize they could sync. So, I guess the only real advantage of the CCA, besides out of the box simplicity, is that most streaming apps now have the cast functionality built in?

Pretty much. Mind you, I use mine with PiCorePlayer and Logitech Media Server. I'm unsure if other operating systems support syncing across multiple devices.
 
Why would someone need more than one Chromecast, and to sync them?

I think I figured it out.

Why not just run squeezelite on your Pis and run it as a Pi Squeezebox? It is what I plan on doing once I get the time to load up the system on the Pi stuff I recently bought.
