HELP!!! My cat thinks one of my speakers is a scratching post!

One of my cats loved to use my DCM speakers as scratching posts. I realized, quite by accident, that he is terrified of helium balloons.
Now each speaker has a few helium balloons floating above it.
Problem solved.
One day he tried anyway and the balloon weight fell and he hid for 3 hours. LOL

My experience is mainly with dogs but this might be worth a try: there's this stuff called "Bitter Apple" and it functions as a pet repellent. You just spray it on whatever you want pets kept away from and its aroma (undiscernible to humans) keeps them away. Dogs, anyway. Ask at a pet supply store about its efficacy with cats. They may be able to suggest other products as well.

20 years ago we had a cat that was clearly going to tear up the front of a couch. We never saw it- it happened while we were away or asleep.
We fixed it by buying a can of an aerosol product called "NO!" and sprayed the front of the couch every night before bedtime. Worked like a charm!

I had a cat that just LOOKED like it wanted to scratch on my speakers....I used hook and loop (velcro) to attach pieces of cardboard to the grilles. Had to take off the cardboard before using the speakers of course.
Can't remember if the cat just lost interest in the speakers or if I had the cat declawed.

Enigmatic creatures these felines! I'm fortunate my cat scratches anything but my speakers and I have no idea why. Well, I'm not fortunate that my living room furniture is ruined; but my speakers are ok!
She has a scratching post but uses it sparingly.

HELP!!! My cat thinks one of my speakers is a scratching post!

That's a 'big' problem.

Chewing wires too.

I sprayed ammonia on paper towels and left them where I didn't want my cat to be. It worked well.

Cats can be evil. I made sure when I bought a house it had a big enough spare room for my musical 'stuff,' to avoid the problem.

The first disaster was this old EV speaker called a "Leyton" that is connected to my clock radio (no joke sounds awesome!). It had a cane grille and the cat trashed it in short order.

Then the little jerk managed to get in and scratch the top of one of my Heresy I speakers... Meanwhile, down in the main part of the house I have Dynaco A25s and Dynaco A10s, and they sit on them and never scratch at them or bother them. It has to be something with the type of grille and even the wood- because it's not always the grills...

Best to keep the pets away from anything you value. I sit in my music room with my guitars, amps, and hifi equipment on my old (cat scratched) couch and enjoy life with them on the other side of the door.

Also, cats don't like Vicks because of the vapors......and a little dab will do yah ! A little here, there almost everywhere if you want the cat to leave your stuff alone !

And then your house smells like a Hospital.

Naw, they just make you think that...all the while trying to figure out how to eat you. ;)

I have seen those plots firsthand before. Even caught one my cats giving me a taste test durning middle of night when I woke up. Im going by observations that their cat boxes are really just pre ready graves when they finally succeed on fabricating a successful wacking routine. I mean its pretty much inevitable.

I try to keep a cardboard cat scratchier around in case they want something to rip up. It's cheap and it works.

A few years ago, one of our cats misjudged a jump onto a shelf and pulled down my prized and pristine Zenith Transoceanic radio, one of the few possessions I valued enough to bring with me when I moved from Canada to the UK fifteen years ago. The radio was largely unharmed; it still works fine and the cosmetic damage is almost invisible. Yet, had the radio been destroyed, it would have been ok. I certainly wouldn't have blamed the cat.

After all, it was my own fault: I left the radio accessible to cats and poorly protected. If I wanted to cat-proof it, I should have locked it away. I certainly can't blame a cat for being a cat, and cats can't tell a prized human possession from something unimportant.

Anyway, the radio is just stuff. I can always get more stuff, but my cats are my little buddies. I value my friends, including the feline ones, far more than any stuff.

A few days ago, my girlfriend gave me some stuff in a spray bottle she'd gotten for her dogs called 'Bitter Yuck'. It seems to work better with my cat than it did with her poodles. After I sprayed the speaker grille and cabinet liberally with it, my cat Lily sniffed at it for a few seconds right after I sprayed it and she's left it alone since. Hopefully, that will be a lasting fix, but who knows with cats.

Having 5 cats, I feel for you.
I had cats many years ago that killed grills. The current herd, I only caught one once. I lost it (verbally ). I'm not a yeller (probably haven't yelled in several months). I'm sure I threatened her life audibly (think very loud!). I think I got the point across though. She hasn't done it again. I do (or at least did feel bad about it at the time). No the cat was never in any danger.

Its not a "Herd of Cats" but rather a "Clowder Of Cats"

Maybe your cats don't like being lumped in with Stupid Cows.
