Help troubleshooting Luxman R-105 stereo receiver :)

Seeking direction from all Audiokarma gurus :)

Always wanted to learn electronics repair, never had the time. Now that I'd retired, thought I'd finally pick up a new hobby. Got some basic supplies from the sticky here - soldering station with consumables, power supply, a few books. Eager to get my hands dirty!

Just picked up an inoperable Luxman R-105 receiver, to use as my first test subject. The unit is in great shape cosmetically, but doesn't seem to produce any audio. More precisely, I CAN hear the FM radio sound through my headphones hooked up to the phone jack, but only at a very low volume, with volume knob turned up almost to the max. The fact that I can hear the broadcast suggests that the tuner board is working properly? I guess the issue must be with the amplifier.IMG_2378a.jpg IMG_2380a.jpg

To my untrained eye, visually the only abnormal thing inside was the two large capacitors near the power supply. The tops were bulging, indicating that these old electrolytics have degraded. Ordered a couple of new Rubycon ones from Mouser and installed them today. These were a tight fit (~5mm larger diameter than originals), but I put some tape around to insulate a few small resistors mounted in the vicinity. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the issue, and now I need someone to point me in the direction of what to try next. Keep in mind that my electronics knowledge is very rudimentary, but I learn fast (former biological scientist), pretty good with my hands (learned to repair mechanical film SLRs in the last couple of years, etc), and willing to experiment and troubleshoot for hours on end (or until my wife starts yelling). Would be super grateful for any ideas or pointers, or general guidance from all of you experts :) Couple of pictures of the main board attached, and I can certainly provide more information, as needed.

Welcome aboard Gene .. Do you have a legible service manual or schematic ?
 
Looks to have been repaired once before. Output transistors and emitter resistors. Possibly the relay as well. Unless Luxman used Omron.

Quite possible. No idea on the past life of this one. Are you referring to the heatsink-mounted transistors and big white square resisters behind them in the second photo? Could these be the culprit?

Thanks! Yep, have a pretty good copy of the R-405 service manual (identical unit in silver) - with detailed schematics and everything. Picked it up from here.

OK.. At power on. Do you hear a relay " click ' shortly after power on ?
 
Let's see the rear jack panel. Does it have any jacks marked "MAIN-IN" or "PRE-OUT"?

The relay click is often a good sign that the power amplifier section is working.

No preouts or main ins on this one, sorry. There is definitely a relay click.

When I installed the new filter caps, I had to bend one transistor out of the way just a little. I was trying to be gentle and put tape between it and the cap. This transistor (Q7110 in schematic) is part of the protection circuit, apparently. Could I have damaged it? Is there a way to test it in circuit, or would I need to pull it?

Tape monitor is not engaged. Any other ideas? Give me a couple of typical troubleshooting pathways, please! Just think of what you would test next, and I will do it.
 
Hmm, relay clicks, no tape monitor..........it's gotta work. Are you using anything in the aux inputs like a phone or CD player?
 
Have you ruled out dirty switch connections as a possibility? Worked them all back and forth multiple times to possibly clear oxidation?

I tried both both built-in radio (FM) and a stand-alone CD player (confirmed working fine with another receiver) feeding signal into the Luxman's CD/Aux input. Only very low level output is heard - both speakers and headphones. I have another receiver (AKAI AA-V335) that has the same exact issue (very low output), UNLESS the source is switched to "Direct" mode. I am assuming that suggests an issue with pre-amp circuit? This will be my next project though :)

Yes - photo attached. Nothing fancy, something I picked up on eBay a while ago for about $30, if I recall correctly :)

Sprayed all switches (including volume) with deOxit and worked them for a while - no change. I don't hear any scratching - contacts seems clean.

Thanks for suggestions, guys - keep them coming! I bet the solution is something simple and stupid, but what do I know...

Do you have another amp? You could connect it to the Pre-out and see if it works. This will help you narrow down the problem area.

There is no pre-out in this model. I attached photos of the front and back below.

I'll just throw this out there. Might not be a problem but just something to check:

If you can, take a look at the bottom side of the circuit board. The receiver could have been dropped and the circuit board cracked.

Interesting idea. I will inspect the board for obvious defects tomorrow and report.
 
Main board seems intact, no obvious cracks... I think I need to start testing individual components. It would be great to have an idea where to start and what to look for!..
