If the original poster is still shopping, it seems like he’s looking to run only digital sources? I’d go with a nicer DAC, multiple inputs, balanced outputs, and a balanced pro style amp, no fan. I’m using a couple of Carver amps (used but not expensive) and I’m thrilled with the results. For under $500 you get a nice DAC, headphone outs or Bluetooth are options too, maybe 3 or 4 digital inputs like USB, and optical and or coax for a TV or CD player, a remote and balanced outs. I also prefer the sound of a 200wpc power amp, all analog (not a new digital amp) coupled with a decent DAC over an integrated. As long as you don’t need or care about analog inputs. I have SMSL M500 and straight to amp it sounds awesome. I’m sending 200wpc to a pair of large bookshelf speakers for near field desktop system and it puts you in the room for sure. That system’s speakers are Sony APM 22ES. Superb budget system.
I have several receivers that I’ve used with HDMI and although they sound pretty nice for music, and it’s the only cost effective option for surround music, I get much better results for stereo music with the nicer DAC and amp combo. I’m not currently running a sub with that system, but my DAC has both balanced and unbalanced outs so it’s not a problem to add a sub, and I have a Peavey amp (for example) with a low frequency cutoff switch (internal) with some adjustable high pass options so in theory I could cut either 40hz or below, or 80hz or below from my mains and dial in a sub no problem so the sub is still an option.
My best integrated amp is a Kenwood KA1100SD, 150wpc and it’s no slouch, but I’ve fallen in love with the purity of the balanced signal to high power amp. For me , that 200wpc is a sweet spot. I don’t think 100wpc gets you there, especially if you have inefficient speakers.
