Help with infinity quantum 3s

Hope I'm posting this in the right place...

Picked up some Infinity quantum 3s, sans grills, and sans 12" DVC Watkins woofers, sadly. I've got my eyes on ebay and some local classified spots. They appear hard to come by and very expensive second hand. One site 750$ for 2, which I'm sure theyre worth. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck substituting another woofer in this loudspeaker. Looking for a temp solution until I can come across the proper ones. I know they are a DVC 4 and 2 ohm speaker. Wondering if I'd get away with a car audio DVC 4 ohm sub or if I can run just a single voice coil for now without damaging anything.

Get away with is relative. You probably wouldn't be any worse off using a standard 12" vs a car woofer, since the impedance of the second coil is wrong (and car woofers are usually designed for use in an infinite baffle installation, and this is acoustic suspension). Using a freeware speaker designing application (like WinISD), you could potentially model the cabinet (by calculating its total volume) and find a woofer that might be a decent fit. I might consider doing some reversible mods to the crossover to eliminate the high pass crossover to the 4Ω coil (making it low pass only), and use that to connect to the replacement woofer.

However, IMO you're much better off looking for replacements. FWIW, I've seen the 12" Watkins woofers sell for a lot less than $750. Set up an automated search - that's the way to go.
 
Wow. $750 Just for the woofers? Makes me happy that i gave a dollar for the complete pair of Quantum 3's from the original owner in Dallas back in 2007 or so. I can never sell them....there was a great story behind them. They reside at my best friends house ran off my Soundcraftsmen stack. Great speakers...hard to find woofers for sure.

I am pretty sure that any of the Infinity Watkins DVC 12 inch would be fine as long as a pair
These are great speakers and I understand that the speaker volume is very good for the Watkins compared with some of the others of this series
 
Thanks for the replies! Picked up a set of infinity kappa 122.7w 4ohm car subs. (I know they're are nothing like the old Infinity or even close to what's supposed to be in there) Got them for 60$ I held out very little hope they would sound good given their high wattage rating. I was right. They were very low volume wise. So I'm Going to see about a lower wattage 12" 4ohm woofer. My apologies to anyone who may be cringing, but I'd just like to use them while I wait to find a decent deal on the right woofers and refurb the rest.
 
You can't tell by the wattage rating how efficient a speaker will be. Look for a woofer with a higher dB per watt (SPL).

Also, on eBay there's currently a single 12" Watkins woofer for $120 plus shipping (item 192379019462). Needs refoaming, but it does go to show that you can replace with the correct woofers for much less than your original estimated price (there's also another, item 282382359195, but aside from the refoaming it may have voice coil issues).
 
Thanks. Seen those two. Looks like the one VC is rubbing according to the sticker on the back. I'll message the other guy and see if I can get a resistance reading on the VCs. Was hoping to buy both at once, for convenience, shipping cost and hopefully condition. Realize that might not be possible.
 
They're not the same seller, so it's not going to get you any savings on shipping. If it was me I wouldn't take a risk with the woofer with the rubbing voice coil - fixing that is generally a job for a pro, or at least someone with a lot of experience, and will almost definitely cost more than the value of the woofer (especially if a company called "The Speaker Factory" put that sticker on it). Be patient - another will come along.
 
For sure. I've refoamed Around a dozen pair but wouldn't be interested in attempting a voice coil repair. I meant that I'd like to hold out for a pair of woofers from the same extraction/seller. Especially given there's at least 2 versions, the poly cone and the paper cone. I think it would make more sense.
 
Quantums make great subs when the mid and tweet are both missing in action, as the single Quantum 4 I found for free. After a re-foam and a new thicker baffle, it's been behind my screen for a decade at least.

Properly tuned the DVC setup can be a very easy load on the amp, so I made sure to keep the cabinet volume exactly the same.

Watkins woofers, accept no substitute.
