Hello,
I own two of these, and bought a second one "for parts", which turned-out to be more functional than the first, which had deteriorated [these are from the late 70's/early 80's] to no longer having any of the automated functions work. The older one worked perfectly, just didn't auto-return or repeat, etc.
The new one functions as is should electronically (it would seem), except that the Cueing Platform- a crescent shaped guide that is responsible for lifting the tone-arm, which supports the arm as it travels from the arm rest to the center of the disc, and which serves as a guide to-and-from is not allowing itself to lower far enough. This causes;
2) The tone arm will often be hampered from returning to the arm rest. Again, this is because the platform is out of position, usually too high.
The operation manual details a complex procedure to set all of this up [it requires locking the tone arm, cutting the power, and essentially teaching the player where the elevation is], which I have done numerous times, but it doesn't help. I brought this to the local hi-fi shop owner, who scoffed at working of the problem.
So...
I am now 95% certain that the problem lies in said cueing platform. I opened the back of the old player to sneak a peak, and it's definitely complicated, at least a bit over my head. Again, I have a player which functions mechanically, but not electronically, and another, with perhaps the opposite problem [although I am unsure if it's cueing platform isn't working due to an electronic issue! it could be the computer telling it to be out of position for all I know...].
Does anyone have any specific experience with this model, or other Sony models like this? What are your ideas? Should I try to Frankenstein these two, and if so, put what inside which? Does anyone know of a resource (online, or not) that would help me. And finally, if all is lost, who does one turn to? I love this (these) players!

- At various points [depending on the album, or just the day] in an album [the "middle tracks", the very beginning, etc.) the stylus fails to make contact. This makes the sound intermittent, and it sounds very similar to a "skip", but it not; even pressing one's ear again the turntable, with the stereo off, one can hear no audio at those moments,
