I need some advice on connecting a smart television to my receiver. I know that I need to get a converter. My television has a digital output but my receiver only has RCA connectors. I’m looking to spend as little as I can. The television is a LG oled48A2pau. I would appreciate any help that I can get.

As WillVT said, your TV has optical out, so you need a DAC to convert the optical to analogue that can then feed to your receiver via RCA inputs. You also have HDMI out so maybe a DAC that can take HDMI audio and convert to RCA?
 
What's the make of the receiver? If it's a surround receiver it seems unlikely it doesn't have an HDMI input.
 
I know that I need a DAC to connect my tv to my receiver but there are so many options. I want to get one that can do exactly that I need it to do

I was reading the reviews and they are not good. Should I believe what they say or just go for it. I want 5.1 surround sound and the reviews say that it doesn’t work for it

You will not get 5.1 from a traditional stereo DAC.

You would need to upgrade to a more modern home theater receiver that has digital inputs, which can decode 5.1 over optical or HDMI.

With the receiver you have, you are limited to analog inputs only. You do technically have 5.1 inputs, but again they are ANALOG, and you would need a device that outputs 5.1 over analog (like an old SACD player or something). Modern smart TVs, cable boxes, game consoles, blu-ray players, etc will not do this. Everything flows over digital these days.

Unfortunately your receiver is a bit behind the times.
