With the receiver you have, you are limited to analog inputs only. You do technically have 5.1 inputs, but again they are ANALOG, and you would need a device that outputs 5.1 over analog (like an old SACD player or something). Modern smart TVs, cable boxes, game consoles, blu-ray players, etc will not do this. Everything flows over digital these days.

I do understand that my stereo is out dated but I got it from free and it does a good job. I have an older tv that has rca out puts and it works well. I would love to upgrade but can’t afford to. I’m sick with Pulmonary Fibrosis and don’t have the money to spend on it. I will enjoy the stereo that I have until I find something else. I appreciate all of the help that you guys have given me

Yeah, unfortunately home theater stuff gets outdated pretty easily. What that means thought is that folks upgrade a lot, so early receivers with HDMI are not that pricy. I got a Sony 7.1 with HDMI at a yard sale for $15. Good luck!

Does yout TV have a headphone output ??
If so an inexpensive 3.5mm to RCA adapter would be your least expensive option but it will only do 2 channel audio, not 5.1.
 
Well guys I decided to do a little upgrade and get a receiver that has digital inputs. I know that it’s a little over kill but for $25 I couldn’t pass it up. FWIW, BTW, Make sure you get that A/V/R`s all important remote controller as part of the purchase, as you will need it for properly setting up/configuring the Onkyo !

If for some reason its not included in that $ 25.00 deal, be prepared to look for and buying one on eBay, ect.

Thanks for the heads up. Yes it comes with the remote. I’m just concerned about setting it up. It looks so hard. I just need to set it up for one zone so I can connect it my television. Wish me luck.

With most AV receivers having the user manual is almost mandatory for setting them up, especially the first time for you. Vinyl engine and audio engine are the first places to look for the manual. If not there check with other places a google search will find.

For those who have a Yamaha AVR with direct internet access download the Yamaha AVR app from Google pay or Amazon for phone or tablet. Once the receiver is set up the app allows for adjusting most of the playback parameters including tone controls and input selection without going through the nested menus on the receiver.

It came in the original box with all the packing material. I know that it’s old but I need to upgrade to a receiver so I can connect it to my television with i a digital cord. My LG 0LED has Bluetooth. On an old receiver, you can simply purchase some thing like a $25 logitech Bluetooth receiver and use a set of RCA cables into an available input including the one on the front of most older receivers this this would be a wireless connection.

Thanks for your advice. But I decided to get a more modern receiver. If I didn’t find a receiver, I would have definitely gone the Logitech DAC.
