There is serious evidence that Abraham Lincoln's doctors killed him with bumble-fingered probing to remove the bullet from his brain, actually managing to push it further in and make scrambled brains along the way, whereas a proper removal would have left him able to recover with as much function as many stroke victims, or more...
Even the AMA has effectively admitted that medical practice is actually the largest single cause of death. But in the case under discussion, I think the majority of the blame has to rest on the guy who chose to put potentially fatal toxins in his body, in the first place. Lincoln, at least, didn't choose to get shot!![]()
The History channel did a story on this a while back and showed that the entrance hole from the .41 cal round ball (the size used in a .44cal muzzle loading pistol with a cloth patch as this would have been loaded.
Would have been to small for even a small finger on a man to reach past the Lent of the base of the nail SO the Doctor never even touched the ball itself.
Which had the pistol been loaded in an average way (and I have shot many many muzzle loading pistols) at the extreme short range that Lincoln was shot that ball would have most likely gone if not the whole way through his brain the majority of the distance. In fact the record shows just that that the ball travels completely through Lincoln brain from the right ear to the left eye
if you want to try yourself drill a 7/16" to 1/2" D hole in a piece of 3/16" thick wood and see how far you can stick your finger.
