Just had to share a story of an evening at the local thrift store this week. I think my wife has finally given in to my speaker and amp obsession; maybe it's the fact that my collection of 30+ speakers is slowly creaping into her area of our storage room in the basement, I dunno. So we're at said thrift store and for the first time she actually take a stroll down the electronics section browsing the odds and ends of lonely old stereos, starts to poke around under some old carpet, and low and behold finds a pair that were buried. She was actually a bit excited that she spotted something I had not seen and I too was interested, until she pulled one out and said "Are these yorx speakers any good?!" Sigh, absolute trash, but at least she is starting to take somewhat of an interest. There is hope. :D

Either that or we can all lie and make this a mock-thread about the incredible value inherent in vintage Yorx speakers. We could do that.

I was actually on the other side of the fence when I was a kid. I had a Lloyd's. Yorx and Lloyd's were constantly battling for that top spot in the Hi-Fi food chain back in the '70's (Too-bad neither of them were anywhere near it).

And Soundesign. I had one of those when I was a kid. I remember thinking that it didn't sound too bad, but what did I know?

Yeah, I can't remember what age I was when I finally got hip to the "entry-level" stuff, but I wasn't that old.

Emerson. Kraco (and absolutely Soundesign - They seemed like they purposefully-manufactured and marketed for the J.C. Penney's, Montgomery Ward's, G. Fox - well, maybe not G. Fox, Woolworths', etc of the world - Everything I saw in the '70's when I was growing up. God, if I only knew then what I know now....).

- Side Note - I think I have a drunken mouse crawling around in the ceiling. I always hear him walking above, but this time he sounds like he's bumping into things as he goes.

I had a GPX brand all-in-one with an 8-track i got about 1975. I think GPX was a little cheaper than the Soundesign offerings but I thought it rocked. Loud enough for many complaints from the parents to "turn that damned thing down".
The speaker cabinets were wood veneer and not plastic !
 
Lowest I ever had was a Centrex all in one...that was only for a couple years....and then the madness began...

Oh man, GPX was like the poor man's Emerson. I think Kmart carried those (or that "Z" store - I'm not sure). There's a difference though. First of all, the 8-Track players sounded GOOD (Not crazy high-end response, but very-warm - I missed that sound for a long time). And second, the stuff that sold at Kmart back in the '70's and early '80's was built much better than the stuff you find in JC Penney's today.

GPX - That's a good one. It's like a "Logan's Run" kind of reference.

A buddy of mine had a Centrex too.

I think those of us who owned classics like these have a much better grasp of what low-fi really is and makes us appreciate good quality that much more.

I got it for X-mas and it probably came from K-Mart. Wasn't much else around at the time where I lived.

I used to think that it was the cat's meow...until I got some speakers that I could connect to my father's HT receiver, a 1991 Sony, and then I really started to be able to listen to things critically.

New Britain, CT had either Kmart or Mom & Pop stores. The M&P ones were closer so we went there. My mother remarried just to get us out of there. I had 2 bikes stolen in one summer - one right out from under me (We moved to the sticks where I'm much happier - The "Hardware Capitol Of The World" wasn't for me).

Not Penney's, their store brand was MCS, made by Technics and really quite decent.

I was just generalizing. Didn't Penney's sell other brands as well though? I thought I remembered seeing Soundesign in a lot of department stores like that, but I guess they were too-upscale like G. Fox. I guess I should have kicked it down a notch. That was a long time ago.

I had a Soundesign...
But I also had Audio Magazine and Stereo Review. Quickly learned that my income was far below my outgo in those days.
