How hot should the power transformer get? and also the big Silver can? everything else works great just the heat i'm concerned about. any thoughts as to why?:scratch2:
Very nice find! I too just got a Scott LK-72 from a fellow AKer, which I plan to restore.
Yours is in beautiful condition. I bet the KLH Fives will sound great with that amp. I had a Fisher 500c on loan for a month, and of all my speakers, the KLH Six's sounded the best. I didn't get a chance to hook up the Fives I bought from you, which are sounding great, but I Suspect they would have sounded just as good as the Six's.

My 222B power transformer does get very warm after about 2 hours of play time. I can hold my hand on the transformer and its not uncomfortably hot.
I'm running the 222B through a bucking transformer at 114VAC. This amp was rebuilt a few years ago.
The silver can capacitor behind the power transformer should not be running hot, however it may absorb some heat from the power transformer. Does
the capacitor heat up quickly when you power on the amp ? Say within 5-10 minutes ? If so that could be an indication the capacitor is going bad.
Has the amp been rebuilt or had any of the capacitors replaced ?
My 222B is playing now, I'll measure the power transformer temperature with my digital thermometer and post back.
The find is straight from the barn, that is what i was told from seller on the bay site. So i had to disinfect (Mouse droppings), Horrible packing job, and was not surprised it was bent on one corner. All original have not replaced any caps, what brand caps are good for this amp. i love the sound and don't what to ruin it.
After one hour of playing time ...... the hottest spot on the power transformer
is about 130 degrees F. This is the left rear corner near the rectifier tube.
You should definitely consider replacing the caps in that amp before playing it much more. Especially if the silver can cap is heating up quickly.
And you should be running this through a variac or bucking transformer to reduce the input voltage. And make sure it has the correct amperage
fuse installed.
See my earlier post in this thread for some info about replacing the caps......
If I had to do this again I would use the CE can cap from AES to
replace the main PS cap, the one behind the power transformer.
The other can caps I would disconnect from circuit and wire in
replacement caps under chassis.
Cleaned up some more and the power transformer does not get hot, well it does but only due to the heat from the tube close by. It's been on for 20 minutes.
Klipsch Heritage speakers work best with Scott amps. I have 2 sets of modified Cornwall's (called Cornscala's) that sound beyond wonderful with my Scott 272 & 299D amps.
