HH Scott A1600 Amplifier

Its an HH Scott A1600.
Power Consumption is listed at 640 watts.
I haven't popped the top yet but there is a huge transformer and fairly massive heat-sink block visible through the vents.
I haven't been able to find anything on the internet except for the option to purchase service literature.
I would really appreciate any information.
The meters peg @ 200w but I'm not sure that is in any way accurate.

I keep finding cross-references for manuals for the following units:
SCOTT SA120 , SA225 , SA328 , A1100 and A1600 model STEREO.
These models all share the same service manual but I don't feel like buying the download.
The controls for the unit seem to be kind of inexpensively made for a unit which weighs about 40 lbs.
So far I have not been able to dig up much on the web.
I need to hook it up ton some good speakers and see what it will do.
I tried it on some JBL towers I have sitting out in the garage but they are not a good benchmark.
All of my good speakers are inside the house as it's getting rather cool here in KC.
I'm kind of puzzled that a unit with somewhat modest apearances would have such a robust electronic design.
 
Hi.

That was part of a rack system in the late 1980's early 1990's

If it is (interally) like the SA 328, it is 150 watts per channel @ 8 ohms. The amplifier was nortorious of destroying the main speakers provided with the rack system. All in all the other components were rubbish and, the amplifier was the only thing that had any value.

It offered lots of bass and low midrange so, it was more suited for large speakers (15-inch) although the rack system offered twelves. Very good power supply.

Here is a tip. The remote control sensor triggers to flourescent lights so, it may be wise to disconnect it if you don't have the remote control.

Back from the dead, I know! Been auditioning one the last few days, and it seems to have a nice phono section. It's playing from a decidly mid-fi Pioneer PL-670 TT, with an AT-90 cartridge that I like using. Still, it's a pleasant enough unit so far. No way I can open it up with the speakers I'm using right now, so final judgement waits...

I just picked up an A1610 for $20! Seems to work but I'll clean it up and maybe replace the power caps.
  • Does anyone have a service manual or schematic you are willing to share?
  • Also, I don't have the remote. Does anyone have one that you would be willing to loan me? I'd like to capture the IR light signatures and program a universal remote to work with this amp.
One very annoying thing.... it has no volume level indicator (at least as far as I can tell). And it remembers the volume from the last power down. This means one has to be very carefull powering it on or you risk blowing speakers or eardrums!

I have an opportunity to pick one of these up myself. Curious of the power ratings more than anything.

The amp is rated at 150 watts per channel! and no, I have not obtained a manual or schematic yet. There are a couple out there for sale but I chose not to buy one for now. I did replace the main power capacitors though because one of them was swelling.

It doesn’t seem like too many amps are rated much past 120 so this is a helluva sleeper.

Indeed it is.

I'm not wild about the EQ pots but the work. Also, I got my Logitech Harmony remote to turn it on and off and control volume.

One annoying thing is that it uses a digital volume method and when you turn it off it remembers the last setting, but there is no external indication of volume level...which could be a surprise if you turn it off at high volume...

Ok so an external EQ could be useful to use with it. Good to know. Thanks.

Names like MCS and Nikko have finally achieved various degrees of recognition.

Now for sleeper pieces very few know about we have to go H.H. Scott, Curtis Mathes, and Lafayette.

My understanding from my research is that though there was A LOT of crap made by LXI there was in fact a small % of, if not top notch, at least squarely above average stuff made by LXI.

I keep seeing people on here and elsewhere having said that but they never go into detail on EXACTLY WHAT the good stuff was. It is quite maddening actually because there’s like nothing on the web and people seem to want to keep what exactly which LXIs to themselves.
