High Efficiency Suggestions Needed

Steven,

What happened to "the best crossover is no crossover"? :scratch2:

Hahaha, well....that still holds true, and I still have speakers that use no crossover (Mark Audio Alpair 7.3 and Alpair 10.2) which are my absolute favorite. But, this build is focused on dynamics. A speaker that can play both tiny subtleties to massive orchestral happenings. Something my small sized fullrange drivers cannot do.

Plus, it'll be my very first time using any pro audio drivers in a DIY build so I'm looking forward to that. I'll always be a single driver fullrange guy, but with Mark Fenlon of Mark Audio's health declining and lack of products on the market (everyone is out of stock) I'm being forced to look at alternatives. Not to mention if/when I want to have a party these speakers will be more than appropriate to fill a large-ish space with tunes.

Seems like the Jbl 2226 should go lower than 50-60hz. The T&S is showing a FS of 40hz.
Where is the specs on the enclosure? I couldnt find them on the site.

Mark

The site is somewhat difficult to navigate but you can find enclosure specs on his forum with a little searching. I believe there may even be graphs and all that stuff on there as well.

The Pi Speaker kit looks like a good choice. There is a lot of very interesting reading on their web site. Are you planning to upgrade from the Eminence drivers? My speakers (Silver Iris 15's) use Eminence drivers and I think the Eminence drivers are very nice, especially for the price.

As you are going for high efficiency, the larger gauge inductors would seem to be a nice option.

There is some interesting reading in the Pi forum about box design and standing waves. It sounds like you wouldn't want to deviate from the basic box and port dimensions, as they seem to be carefully selected.

I had planned on using all the upgrades and not deviating from the plans at all. I agree with the quality of eminence drivers. I've use the Hawthorne's as well and think they offer a great bang for the buck. In this design I'd like to eek out every bit of potential and use a bit higher quality drivers if I can.

Did you consider the three pi? It's kind of his flagship of the waveguide speakers. I see Wayne's replaced the Lambda woofer upgrade on the three pi with that punchy definimax since I last visited the website. No measurements added for that, although maybe he's posted them on the forum.

Well folks, I hate to break it to y'all but I've gone the opposite route of what I had intended for this thread. I picked up a Class D Audio SDS-250C amplifier and an Mandolin (SB Acoustics) kit from Meniscus. I'm a bit sporadic in my actions lately. I came to the realization that my little 10x10 room just can't handle a large build right now especially as untreated as it is. So I decided to go with a small bookshelf build and focus more on room treatments at the moment.

In the not so distant future I will once again pursue a high efficiency build after I've moved into a new home. Stay tuned for a build thread in a week or so.

Cheers,
Steven

Are you getting the pre-built Class-d amp? Mandolin speaks look cool too.
Get to work! HAHA.

Hey Mark, yes I ordered the pre-built. Here is a direct link to it ( http://classdaudio.com/sds-250c-class-d-audio-power-amplifier.html ). I ordered it because I absolutely loved the Class D Audio amp based on the SDS-224 boards. I had sold the SDS-224 a while back due to money problems so I figured that instead of buying the same amp again, may as well go with one that's twice as powerful. This setup should work well in my room and I have high hopes for the SB Acoustics drivers since the SB Acoustics engineers are the same engineers who made the highly acclaimed Scanspeak Revelator line. I was told that the drivers in the Mandolin kit are on par with the Revelators. Whether that's true or not I'll never know, but at least I can rest easy a bit in knowing that they are high quality drivers built by a company with amazing engineers.

The Class D Audio amp thread has been going on for several years over at AC and should be required reading. It's already reached legendary status and could eventually challenge the Dark Star OB thread which began in 2005.

Yep, that's the thread that turned me onto Class D Audio in the first place a few years ago. Great wealth of information there and one hell of a long read.

I really like the sound of these amps. IMO they sound like GREAT tube amps with loads of power. Highly recommended. :)
