Highest-end gear you've found at a thrift

"Oh! .., You had dirt ...!"

Well.

I found a Ferrari Dino. Had no idea they were good.

I mean, it had a little ding on the back bumper; albeit, one you could only see in moonlight. And, I wasn't even looking for a car. There was a Sansui G33000 that almost escaped my attention, it was tucked under a 9090DB I did not see right away - both were stacked in the CB/Marine radio section. Of course that lead to further investigation.

So anyway; I'm paying for both - like $15. and mention I have no way to carry this gear home. Buddy at the til says, "Maybe buy a car."

Yeah right.

"Got good cars. Porsche, Lambo, Ferrari."

Yeah right.

Long yarn short, the Lambo had ripped leather interior and was an unappealing green. Porsche was just old, I didn't want to buy someone else's headache etc .. The Dino, near pristine.

K. I had to find a headlight bulb. .. like way after I got home - But $45!!

Well, another $30 for the over-due towing bill.

Crazy. For sure.

Awesome day of course. However, I ended up selling everything but the 9090DB for over $200. Like, WAY over.

Plus; I mean, who sells a 9090DB?

:wtf:

Cars Cost Less In Wetaskiwin! :D

I forgot the Sansui Model 8 deluxe, rehabbed by CDFixer a while back. It is now the main source in my living room.

The highest quality gear I've seen at a thrift was a full Thiel home theater system with a Lexicon CX-7 amplifier. Had everything except the main floor speakers. Two subs, pair of in-walls, pair of surrounds, and the big center channel with a Sound Anchor stand. I wanted the amp but it was a package deal.

I've found some great stuff. Some of the best was a marantz sr-18 receiver I missed out on by moments. I felt less bad when I discovered their propensity to blow up, it may have already been done. Since then however I've found my rotel rb985, my adcom, gfa6000, and a ps audio 4.5 preamp. All together for about 3/4s of a bill.

Highest end gear I've ever found, and this isn't a great score, was a pair of Definitive surround home theatre speakers I got for 78 bucks at a pawn shop on the "iffy" side of town.

They retailed for $900 or so. Far better than the other speakers in my h/t.

best find ever was my Mark Levinson ML-1 and ML-3 for $50 each at a garage sale... had been grandpa's gear that was stored almost 20 years ago... didn't even know if it worked because the kids couldn't find CAMAC cables to hook it up...sent the Levinsons back to their maker for service, and they are flawless...

Now that's what I'm talkin' about. Congrats!

Saw that Vector Research totl model but did not take it. I did get a Sony CE375 --5 disc carosel cdp w/ working remote for $12 not a scratch on the thing. Up next for my bdrm. A Sony DVP #300 dvd/cdp also w/ remote for $15 both still work but the 5 disc has seen very little use. Many LPs but my thrift store finds are not close to high end at all. A Mac would last , well I don't think it would make it to the floor. Garage and moving sales is where I did better.
