hi to all,
Finally I finished another headshell.
This one is made in brazillian cherry wood.
With a homemade 4 pin connector.
The pins are sterling silver soldered to the lead. The main idea was create a light headshell for the heavy Empire cart.
The lead should be shorted soon, are too long.

Beautiful headshell, nice work! :thumbsup: I bet that Empire will sound really nice with the wooden headshell. What I've read is that metal bodied (mounting) cartridges sounds the best with wooden headshells. Plastic bodied cartridges sound better with metal.

Thank you for the nice words.
Sound like that, The empire was sound too harsh on those aluminum head shells, the first prototype was a MDF headshell and the difference was incredible.

I do have an Empire 2000Z. Used that on my SME 3009 Improved arm. Stuck with using the magnesium headshell since it's the fixed headshell model. I could use it on my Technics SL-1650 with a wooden headshell. ;) Nice to hear that your Empire is sounding better! :thumbsup:
 
So, here is some difference in the listen.
Normal aluminum headshell add colors, kind of background, probably isolating the cart from the headshell can solved it
Wood narrow neck headshell develope a solid sound making it more defined.
The other wood headshell is not narrow neck and the sound is not bad, but is not defined as this one.
My conclution is, the smallest the headshell is, the less acoustic contamination will exist.
Still few more test to do, specially because the light HS make the counterweight closer to the pivot changing the mass.

So this is why the sound is robust.
All the physic involve in a TT is abysmal.
But is good to know the rules.

My Thorens TD-160 I took out the entire cueing mechanism and the speed change lift mechanism too. Sounds better, less is better! Didn't want that stuff on when I have the SME 3009 arm mounted. Only use it to play 33 albums. Have the Technics SL-1650 to play my mono and 45 rpm records. Thorens sounds better than the Technics!

Agree, my TT is manual, so you have less ratteling thing moving.
