Like in automobile engines: there's no substitute for displacement. !2" is the minimum for me. Equivalent to maybe a 327 cu in V8.

Just remember even the 327's can be jazzed up as can the choice of make/materials of 12" woofers.

Often not the size but the substance that counts.

Q

To the person who asked about the 30" woofer used in the Patrician 800, Have you heard a pair? I would like to give them a higher rating, but prefer RTR's 24". In the early 80's I participated in an Altec Seminar in Anaheim California. Among other visits we toured the Crystal Cathedral. And along the back wall on the floor were these large black boxes. I don't remember how many but they contained EV 30" woofers/ They were used as subs for the for Radio City pipe Organ used in the Cathedral. If you can give up some dynamic range or can afford big amps I'll take stacked pairs for Mcintosh ML-4's. I will admit the newer Mac woofers have lower distortion and more natural quality, but if you want to move walls, buckle your knees and have an eye widening experience the stacked ML-4's were the answer. I haven't heard the latest JBL but 4435's could be impressive, too with 1/8 th the power of the Macs requiring maybe twice the power for the 4435's.. The difference between 600 watts and 75 watts makes the JBL's even more affordable. I asked a dealer what kind of a deal cold he make me on 3 JBL 67000 for my HT System. He said he would throw in the third speaker. Imagine 3 DD 67000 as the basis for your 8K home theatre system. Isn't it fun to dream.

What do I call my main system? Do you count the subwoofer?

The HT system that's on 90% of the time? Then the 15" I voted for (Klipsch Chorus II).

The bedroom 2-channel system that gets listened to every night? Then <6" in Music Hall Marimbas, or 10" JBL sub.

Family room 2-channel - Always in rotation. Currently 12" AR woofers in Frankenstein/EPI 3-ways.

Man cave, 2 x 10" in Infinity RSIIs

For I have a pair of Speaker lab 7 clones that I built about 40years ago. After a bit of rework they sound pretty darn good. So they have 10's and 12's. I'm gathering the parts to build a set of folded horns to replace the clones and their design is pretty unique as they use 8" sub-woofers. I'm curious to see how they sound. The design is http://www.billfitzmaurice.com/David.html .

Currently, my mains are DCM TF-600's with a 6.5 driver. These are a transmission line cabinet, and you would not think that the drivers were that small by the sound of them. I've heard some folks say they thought the DCM's were a little bass shy, but I think they sound fantastic. The bass is there, it's just not in your face. I listen to mostly rock music, and I have a bunch of Cerwin Vega's in the house, so that ought to tell you that I like it loud, and with a good bass kick! The DCM's will never have that slam, but that's a good thing! When I need to shake the walls, I just crank up one of the other systems in the house that have the Cerwins on them! The DCM's do everything else very well, with much better imaging and a better soundstage than the Cerwins. These are in my will, delihaus gets 'em when I go!
I have a pair of 600's they are great speakers, at one time I had three pairs.

My speakers size

Hi all,
My 4 Altec 3154 15" woofers in 2 separate 400lbs custom made boxes 60"X31"X22" can really shake a house... :tresbon: :music: (ask my ceiling... it fell down a few years ago...) I also have 2 sets of Altec 6X9 4A used as mids and tweeters on a 4ch amp:thmbsp:
Happy listening to all
Maurice:banana:
I have Altecs also, 1 pair A7's, my custom version of Model 19's, a custom built pair of cabinets with dual 15's and 511 horns on top 32wx20dx50h.
2 pairs of model 15's, I love them all!!!!

I guess my Pioneer HPM-1100s are that big. 15.75" moves a lot of air, now I need to check the surrounds, they may need to be replaced by now.

The one on the picture is not my setup (but i wish it was!)
I only have 5-1/4" polycarbonate woofers on my Polks, i should feel ashamed...
I feel i need to upgrade my setup in this year and the next, i'm either going to build myself a pair of 12' DIY speakers (DAD Party by Renato Lira, pictured) or i'm going to buy a pair of towers, something like the Yamaha NS-777, if i work really hard.

How big are the woofers in your main system?

If you aren't happy with them, vote with what you think are the ideal size in a main system.

I realise there are lots of variables......... but maybe theres a sweet spot somewhere in woofer sizes.....
I know that you're asking about MAIN systems,
but I have a more fun answer for my mancave system's speakers.

They are JBL JRX 225s with TWO 15" woofers and a horn on each side.

Surprisingly, perhaps, they don't go down that low,
but if I want loud, that's no problem.

Downstairs, I really use them much more for TV than music.
And not especially loud.

Oh boy, here we go again...

- living room system: 11" (yes, 11")
- dining room system: 8"
- basement hifi: 8"
- basement pro rig: 12"
- garage: 6.5"

They are all main systems, they are all utilized in equal amounts.

Downsized to 8" about four years ago, when I bought the RS6b speakers. Strangely enough, they sound similar, bass-wise to the RSa speakers they replaced.

My main systems have a crap-load of 8" woofers.

Main 2-channel system speakers are 8" Tannoy dual-concentrics,

HT left, center and right speakers are EPI 150s.

I also have a total of three subwoofers- one in front, with a Dayton Designer Series 8" DVC driver, and two, behind the couch, with EPI 8" woofers. All three subs do also have 15" passive radiators. And play to BELOW 20Hz flat, in-room.

The only active woofers in that room, that aren't 8", are the 6.5" woofers in my HT rear speakers- EPI 50s....

Funny enough- the audio system in my Mazda Protege, ALSO has four 8" woofers. An EPI 8" in each front door (playing from the lowest bass, up to 400Hz or so, active crossover), and two more EPI 8" in the rear deck (crossed over to where they only play between about 20-40Hz), all in effectively infinite- baffle. That system is also flat to very close to 20Hz, and will make the air literally palpably shake, in the car, on pipe organs...

The speakers in our upstairs system (living room) have 6.5" woofers- but in pretty large cabinets. Vifa C17WG69, in 2 cubic feet enclosures, tuned to about 28Hz. Plays flat to below 30Hz. Enough to not need a sub, with TV/movies. We don't play it that loud, and under these conditions, it's plenty. The crazy thing, is that it will play LOUDER at 30Hz, than at 60Hz, before it bottoms out- the port is SO effective at reducing cone motion at port resonance, that the cone moves LESS at 30Hz, than at 60Hz, at the same SPL level...

Regards,
Gordon.

My B&W 703 S3s have two 6.5" woofers in each box. They're OK, but don't go below about 45 Hz. I have a Pair of Infinity Beta 50s in my bedroom that have two 8" bass drivers in each speaker. They go LOW, but overall they don't sound as good as the B&Ws. I have an SVS 3000 Micro sub that has two 8.5" drivers IRIC.

2 Mc. XRT-30 speaker system`s sealed bass cabinets with (2) 12" HP/LD woofers in each that have no problem readily hitting 20 Hz.
Being driven by (2) Mc. MC-1201 mono block rewired for 240v powered via their own dedicated 30 amp circuit from 80 Hz on down.
No subwoofer(s) were needed.
