How did I do for $75 plus a Wharfedale Question?

Hello All. Today I picked up the following for a total of $75:

NAD 2100 Monitor Series Power Envelope Amp
NAD 1600 Monitor Series Preamp/Tuner w/remote
Pair of Wharfedale 507.2 speakers - wood enclosures
Pair of Wharfdale 504 speakers - wood enclosures
NAD 5170 Compact Disc Player w/remote and 3 six disc magazines NIB
Original user manuals

I picked them up from a $1M house that was sold and the owner wanted them to go to someone who would use the system and appreciate it. Everything is in beautiful physical condition.

I could find virtually nothing on either of these Wharefdale Speakers. I can't say I was overly impressed. My references are Linn Saras and Boston Acoustics A100's so that may be why. I assume these Wharfdales are from the mass market dark ages of the early 90's?

I am going to sell the CD player since I only stream or listen to vinyl now.

All in all I think it sounds OK for $75 and I will give it to my son to use in his college dorm room. I may use the 504s as computer monitors.

Any input would be appreciated.

That gear is too good to let college kids get their hands on,
The PE stuff has been known to kill speakers if not handled gently, eg :- college kids.

Well, this one is pretty responsible. Although his college friends may not be. His older brother is another story....
 
Sorry for the phone pics. I have it set up in the kitchen to make sure it all worked. I have not checked the phono stage yet. I have the speaker grilles too in excellent condition.

You did real good.
The NAD 1600 in working condition without the remote control sells for more than you paid for the whole package.
 
Hi,

The speakers are from the bayonet driver mounting period of Wharfedales
output. Getting the drivers out is impossible unless you know how to do it.
I've never done it but have a very good idea how to.

From what I recall they should be pretty decent speakers.
Linn Sara's are hardly a reference speaker. The A100's
I don't know but suspect they are not reference either.
The Wharfedales should be decent, but no great shakes.

Of course the package for $75 is an utter bargain.

I meant the other speakers are my only other point of reference, not true reference speakers. Sorry for confusion in terminology.

After setting up the system, it sounds much better. The label on the back of the 507s says to see the manual for placement. Could not find a manual online. However, they are now closer to a wall and that seems to have helped them versus being wide open on the kitchen counter.

I know $75 is a good deal for most systems, but I am not too familiar with much of the 80s-90s black components. Some of it is good and a lot was awful.

I love my Linn Saras, too, but I now run them with a pair of cheapo Wharfedale CRS 3s, which provide some more detail and better soundstage. The deep, controlled bass of the Saras, and their overall pleasing, non-fatiguing sound are so attractive it will be hard for me to replace them.

Maybe try running the Wharfedales with your Saras and see what you think?
