How did we survive???

Two per swing.

VW bus -- where you are the "crumple zone".

Literally, there is just a thin piece of sheet metal between you and whatever you hit (no engine, no front trunk, just thin sheet metal and glass 1 foot from where you are sitting ).

I never notice that until I saw one recently. That is the only vehicle I would not ride in or drive.

When I was very young our neighbors had moved so my brother, two cousins and myself were nosing around in a shed when we found some dynamite caps that they left behind. We went back to my house and detonated one of them. Needless to say we got into big trouble for that.

Cherry bombs and M-80s were things we liked to play with too.

I've only ever seen two vehicles fall over on their sides from turning too hot in an intersection.

Both were VW buses.

These had some series snort to them. At 50 feet they were traveling at the speed of sound, and still half full of water. Mine went right on through the drywall and out the other side, no problem. Outside, what goes up must come down.
A shot to the side of the head? Dead.

The instructions specifically stated "Do NOT pump over 15 times" or something like that.
Of course, we had the thing on the ground pumping with 2 hands until we could pump no more.
And we were always experimenting with different amounts of water.
I can still remember the trail of water as it shot upwards toward the moon! Great fun!

Gotta say, being a kid seems like it was a lot more fun back then.
I was always armed with the Sears, JC Penney and Montgomery Wards Christmas catalogs picking out exciting, larger than life toys for my Christmas list.
And I spent many sleepless nights agonizing over what would be on my list. So many choices!

I look at the Target Christmas toy flyer now and my reaction is, well, boring.....not much to pick from. Legos, action figures and electronics.
But, it's all in what is available when you are growing up.
The Target flyer is boring to me but exciting to my 6 and 8 year old grandsons.
