How Do They Compare? JBL AR etc

Too bad. Don't rule out KLH, ADS, and Advent, all great east coast sounding speakers and plentiful.

The way I see it is JBL brings their pro engineering into the home line. Look on the web for pix of the woofs from both speakers and you can see a real difference. The couple extra hundreds is well worth it in terms of sound quality and resale value.
 
Happy hunting! Getting a good deal is always some combination of luck and having cash in hand to make it happen.
 
I have to renew this thread because I still haven't been able to find what I'm looking for .....long story and I wont bore you. I wanted to know how Dynaco A25s fit in to this and also KLH Model 6? So for summary These are the models I'm currently looking at.

AR 2ax
AR 4x
AR 4xa

JBL L88
JBL L100

Dynaco A25

KLH Model 6

I like the look of all of these but really have limited experience listening to most of them. I've listened to AR 2ax and JBL L100 and loved them both for different reasons. This would be for a LR 20 x 30; I listen to everything from hard rock to jazz, classical, folk, country ...funk...literally anything. These would be run by a Sony STR 7065, I listen to records, CDs and stream as well. Hoping to spend 200-300 tops. Is there anything else I should be looking at, thoughts on the models above?

Some folks with more knowledge than me have been really been pushing the Dynacos, less fussy, more durable? Thoughts on the KLH ?

With the exception of the AR2ax, Dynaco A25 and KLH Model 6, you are going to be hard pressed to find anything on that list in nice shape and fully functional for $200-300. If you do find something in that price range, they are probably going to need some work, which means more $$$. You are also comparing apples, oranges and bananas in that list, as there is a very dramatic difference in "sonic signature" amongst that list of speakers.
 
Slightly more modern, but exhibiting the same East Coast sound, I'd also look for ADS, Boston Acoustics, and NHT models. All very musical and capable of supporting most any genre of music. Some 2 way and 3 way. Plus that reminds me, EPI speakers too. So, to name a few, hopefully within your budget:

ADS: L420, L470, L520, L570, L710, L780
Boston Acoustics: A60, A70, A100, A150, A200
EPI: 100, 120, 150
NHT: Super Ones, Super Two, 1.3, 1.5, 2.1, 2.3, VT1.2

Fair point but in response I've seen everything on that list at or near my price range. I generally expect any 40+ year old speakers will need work. So given the price range what would be your preference ......why? Every speaker has a different sound and I get that JBL and AR are pretty different but AR and Dynaco, KLH are similar and all of them are generally similar in size and year of production. I think its a reasonable group to compare.

I agree with Nucities thoughts. Glenn and I have similar likes with the AR, KLH and ADS brands. The Dynacos will be east coast sounding too.
I think the big difference here for you will be the west coast vs east coast sound that has be referenced along the way here. My impression is that your Sony will probably so better with the west coast stuff, but that is just me based on what I have tried to par with what over the years.
 
Whoever said you'd buy a pair of speakers for life? Get the Dynaco's and if not for you an easy sell later. I'd be on the look out for some 2ax's in the mean time.

I think you might be asking for the moon, on an asteroid budget. However, I can tell you the KLH Model 6 is a fine speaker, and I scored a perfect pair at Salvation Army for $4.99/pair. There are a couple of pairs on FleaBay for 150-250. While I have not heard the others, I can tell you that they are amazing sounding speakers for just about any genre. Highly recommended. There is another adage about bass reproduction: "There's no replacement for displacement." I get that you may be concentrating on this part of a speaker's sound , per your review of the Marantz. I would guess, also, that your Sonab speakers do a fairly good job with the high end.
With an amp like a Yamaha (a bit less so with a Sony), you could mate it with a larger woofer or a less efficient one that had some balls and have a good outcome. You may like the East Coast speakers but I'm guessing that going from the Sonabs to those will wear pretty thin. What kind of music do you spin? How big/small is your listening area?
 
I have and like ADS, Advent. Also another East coast speaker, Ohm C2 10" 3-way bookshelf. They made a few other large bookshelfs, but I have not heard them. Ohm is still in business and makes replacement drivers and other parts. No affiliation.
 
Once again I received good AudioKarma for posting here. I must have been channeling Arthur Smith. On my way home I saw a listing on CL.for a pair of KLH model 6s. Drove by and he had them set up with a Sony 6060 similar to my 7065 (maybe cooler?!?) anyway those speakers absolutely blew me away! They were recently recapped and sounded incredible...great base, open and what I found most surprising is really nice detai on the high end ....had him spin some jazz and rock...super nice guy. Asked me for $150 and I happily paid that. They were in really great shape maybe a 9 to of 10. I need to post here more often, it's like my good luck charm.

That's a great deal for these ready to go for the next 30 years! Sooooo......we need to see the pics!
I love mine, equally great with tubes or SS power. Just be careful with the bass and high volume, you don't want to hear the "POP", it will scare the crap out of you the first time you hear it. It's the VC bottoming out.

I haven't even dusted them off...I hooked them up to the Sony STR 7065 and that unit has never sounded better. I'll do a little detailing on the cabinets and I've already ordered a new (vintage) badge (one was missing). The grill cloth looks original and in damn good shape for it age. Playing some Fela Kuti and it's like I'm there....these are sweet.

I could not imagine these speakers sounding any better than they do. True electroacoustic transducer marvels.
