How do you display, organize, store your media - books, CDs, tapes, vinyl, ... Let's see photos.

My collection of recorded music and books has outgrown the two bookcases in my Music Room. I have a third just for books and odds-and-ends.)

With the addition of a second SACD player, I've been adding those to my collection and accessing them for playing more often. The result is that I've overwhelmed the two West Elm bookcases I had earlier.

So I pulled out all the CDs/SACDs and piled them on the dining room table:


I then did a bit of shopping and found these mango wood boxes at H&M. A bit pricey and a bit too long for the shelf width but classy. I had earlier bought some white plastic boxes at Daiso for a third of the price. Those I used for the second tier pop CDs. First box was classical SACDs, then pop and jazz SACDs then classical CDs, etc.


The bookshelf arrived (finally!) and then I discovered that all the boxes were longer then the shelf is wide - but not by too much. Added some felt stick-on pads to the bottoms of the boxes to prevent scratches (I hope.)

Here's the final arrangement:


Still have some shuffling and rearranging to do but it's working fine for now.

How do you guys keep your media organized?

The easiest route for me was an IKEA Expedit (Kallax) bookshelf which has 25 separate 14” boxes. It’s almost floor to ceiling. Very popular for vinyl lovers and it comes in different sizes for smaller areas an collections. It’s also suitable for CD storage when dedicated CD storage boxes are used, they can be stacked 2 high double row in each cube. I sort alphabetically and by genre and the boxes have labels.

My CDs are in 5 rooms of the house in various cabinets & drawers, 2 closets (one with 2 each - 700 CD solid Teak cabs), and in boxes on the floor. They are everywhere. Organized KAOS. really.

I 'tried' to organize my jazz CDs 2 days ago.

I took them ALL out of the 2nd bedroom cabinet and put them in stacks on the floor of my bedroom closet including a box full of MFSL 24K golds. Still hundreds of various CDs left in the bedroom cabinets. Now I can't enter the closet. Not a good idea. Guess I will be putting them all back' into the 2nd bedroom cabinets today where they were in the first place. A big round trip for nothing. I guess it's just the way it is and is always be - I surrender.

LPs are all in one bedroom totally 'organized' on interior cabinet shelves with doors. 1000+.

I really need a dedicated music room like the one you have. But... I'd have to get rid of the 3rd bedrooms furniture, which is all full of required living 'stuff', and that's never going to happen.

A few years ago my wife decided to mount our cd's as ac collage on the first wall you see when you come inside from the driveway. Alphabetacle buy artist an each artist chronologically. They accessable but use Apple Premium High Res Streaming now, so don't get into them much.

I'll start with my rather modest collection.

Despite having a couple of hundred vinyl records, they basically sit in the closet (although I am planning the purchase of a upgrade in turntable).

My music format of choice is CD/SACD. They are kept in a spare bedroom, using Ikea's Benno (later called Gnedby) CD shelves. Each of them can hold approximately 180 discs. Here is a photo of how it looks at my previous house....

However, I have now collected (or hoarded) so many CD/SACD that some are stored a couple of climate-controlled public storage units. I know....I am sick.

I have more CD’s than anything else, but I barely play them anymore. I have a massive amount of music files on multiple SD cards that, to me sound better in most cases. And certainly more convenient.

Between Emma and I, we have few records - mostly old favs from college in the 70s and 80s ... but I do have an extended collection of CDs and SACDs,
currently housed on nearly ancient IKEA Bondi shelves in Beech finish (circa 2000).
I took the doors off the cabinets around 2010 since it limited access.
Around 2015 I realized I could fit more CDs on the shelves if I added the black cardboard boxes like a library card collection,
so I could use the depth of each shelf and not just line them up across the front edge.
More recently (2020), I moved the CDs, cover art and related papers out of the jewel-box cases and into a sleeve system, to increase the density of music on the shelves -
I can put over 4 times the music in the same trays with the bulky jewel boxes.
Cds in cardboard eco-cases and box sets stay in the original packaging.

The CDs have also been ripped in Mac lossless format into itunes, so we can load it into our phones or stream around the house via WiFi through Mac Airports
or a Raspberry Pi at the main 2ch system.

Recently decided to get my CDs out of the totes in the basement. Bought a relatively cheap rack specifically designed for CDs. Record albums are in their own Kalex units. Feels like the 90s again.

Wow - I have nearly the same set of Mid Century Modern shelves in walnut in our office, hooked up as a set of 3, with some extra shelves I added.
I found another set a few years later and we only use them as a set of 2 in our kitchen -

I'm no woodworker but it serves my purpose & is not a visual embarrassment.
That is an expedit in the middle of the thing.

I've got
8 Franklin Mint Record Boxes with 4 filled with records, 4 filled with two rows of CD.
3 18" Napa Valley CD boxes
2 Ebay CD footlockers with hanging files, CD and Booklet only, no jewel cases.
The last was a gift with nearly 1000 CDs in total (some still in jewel cases) so I'm ok with the limited documents these discs came with. I love how much less space they take up.

If it’s important to me, I’ve ripped it. I don’t have to organize it. The control app will do it for me. If I’m going to take the time to search for physical media, it will be vinyl. I’d do it for open reel if I still had it, though.
