How is/was Harman/Kardon thought of?

I have a Harman Kardon AVR 3600 receiver and Infinity speakers in my home theater and am thrilled with them. Very good sound and great value. I did a LOT of research when picking components and the HK/Infinity gear kept floating to the top of my list for quality, value, and efficiency.

I don't have any experience with the vintage stuff of theirs.

I've got a PM650 myself, and like others have said, i'm floored at the build quality of these things. I can have this whole thing pieced out on my desk in like 10 minutes if i so choose to. Everything is very accessible that needs to be and it runs very cool. Adjusting DC offset and bias is also very easy and straightforward.

to chime in I've never owned one but the prices on the bay look like a good place to start for a newbie into audio gear with a desire to rebuild. The looks of the equipment are IMO is very decent.

question to the informed is: Are they fairly easy to work on in the electronics-pcb and components dept.?

I did not educate myself enough back in the 70's to by HK. For some reason I thought it was a "lesser" brand. I bought a 330c from the original owner 1 year ago, and simply love the sound it provides to my speakers. I guess I am glad they were built very well.

My Dad was into hifi back in the 50's through the 60's. He didn't have a high opinion of HK in those days.

I would say no! The PCBs and components themselves are easy enough to work on but the boards are connected to one another and screwed into the chassis like a Chinese jigsaw puzzle! Worth the effort, though.

That's exactly why I missed out on this gem too. The British Naim and Meridian were getting all the raves in the late 70's. And for good reason. Square wave assessment was being laughed at obviously in an effort to prevent what certain manufacturers probably knew would be some serious competition.

Back from the dead.I was searchin around lookin for this topic and this thread was the closest I got. What is the diff between the Citation 16 and 16a I have the black one it just says the 16, Is one better than the other, designed differently?

The Citation 16 uses an IC for the front end of the amp while the 16A uses discreet components instead of the IC. Otherwise they are the same. There were three different Citation 16's. The two aforementioned and a third without the LED VU meters and I think this one also used the discreet components.

So is the 16 the black one or the silver model?

I believe both. I have a 16 series A (16A) which is all black with VU meters, while a poster in the above linked thread has a later 16A with silver face. I think the original 16 is silver only but not totally sure. On the back of your 16 does it say "Series A" because that is the easiest way to tell.

In the 1970's a friend got an HK Citation 11 & 12 through an insurance claim. I remember thinking that was an upscale brand and way overkill for the Akai receiver someone stole. Same with the JBL L100's he got for a pair of Akai 3 ways.

His Citation worked well with the JBL's but not with my Double Advents. His wife kicked him out and he stored his stereo at my place.

A couple of years later when I wanted a new amp, the HiFi shop I frequented recommended a Citation 16. There were misgivings but I was assured it was vastly superior to a Citation 12.

I had it one week then returned it. It did operate under conditions that shut down the 12 but didn't "wow" me. And as a matter of fact, I believed the 12 sounded better during the time it was able to operate.

The retailer that sold me the 16 would have refunded me but convinced me to try out a Kenwood Model 600 first. I was apprehensive but agreed - nothing to lose etc. That Kenwood became my amplifier for 30 years.
