How lucky can a guy get?

Help needed with TAPE 2

Got the tuner cleaned up…re-capped and thermal compound on the heat sink/transistor finished re-capping the main power supply. I have re-soldered the lamp solder joints and installed new LED’s, thanks Don Haywood for the LED’s.

One of the power meter lamps was burnt out and that is now fixed, not a fun job but if the meter is carefully detached from the hold bracket, (gently pull/pry meter till the adhesive gives way) then the meter can be moved to access the lamp for easy R&R. The original adhesive will stick it back in place just fine. It still must be done very carefully though.

The selector switch shaft was put back in place and now all the Dolby functions do work except in TAPE2. The REC LEVEL works some what at 12:00 high otherwise the right channel just has faint sound. Deoxit the pot a couple of times but still not functioning any better. Has anyone had a problem with the REC LEVEL switch? In mono it works fine and TAPE 1 works perfect.
I may need a little help here, it could be the switch but I think not, anyone had this problem with the REC CAL in TAPE 2?
Peter

Any ideas out there?

Cleaned the pots again and still all Dolby functions work perfect including the test tone in REC 2 but still in REC 2 the right channel is dead. This is one of the later units with all the factory changes to the Dolby board. I'm pretty good with the pass Thu’s on the older units but don't have much experience fixing the newer Dolby boards. Freeze all over does nothing to bring the right channel back.
Kind of stumped here… Anyone have any ideas? I’m stuck.
Thanks,
Peter

Very nice re-veneered cases

About 6 for the bottom plate will do it.
Really looking forward to some more of your fine work with the cases but the case doesn't go on till I get the REC 2 right channel issue solved.
Leaning towards replacing the right channel IC on the Dolby board but still not sure.
Rob you are the best!
Thank you

bad pot

Fixed the REC 2 right channel problem, one of the wipers was broken on the pot. A donor switch is soldered in and it works like it should now. Glad it wasn't in the Dolby board!::beerchug:
Looking forward to putting the case on. Still have some clean up and final deoxit, mostly minor stuff but time consuming.
Right on schedule with this restoration, maybe 3 or 4 more weeks till completion.

In test

The wiper was completely broken off and gone somewhere, probably in my shop vac.

Now the unit is in test…WFMT Chicago, Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin, Sand man with Metallica will come later.

Krylon Gloss Black paint spray onto the dial plate makes it look like new, let the paint set a week and saved all the compression strips for reinstall.

This unit is still on my bench and tested for the last month but I can’t find anything wrong with it. As you might see from the slide show I am no photographer.
Thank you lbpete, echowars and a host of other for showing me the way and thank you merrylanders for the fine re-veneer of the case and providing original screws for the heat sink.
I stained and finished the case and probably should have left that to Merrylander. The dark stain is what I was looking for though.
In some of the pictures there is an Audio Research amp connected to the pre-out. The Audio Research does sound better than this Sansui 9090db as an amp but not that big of a difference and definitely does not have the same punch as the Sansui. The Sansui pre-amps are phenomenal.
I think all the screws and parts are original and in excellent condition except for most audio path caps and resistors, (re-capped). It was worth the investment of original and correct Toshiba outputs.
I really did get lucky with this unit because it must have been very well taken care. I think it had a rough life for a short time. Glad I caught it just in time. Lucky I guess.

Updated pics in previous post

Here are some pics of a case merrylander re-veneered and stained for my 990db.
The "How lucky can a guy get" job is done.
Thanks all!
