How many Prince fans do we have?

~Maxx

I AM the Dark Side...
I was kicking around the notion of starting a Prince social group and figured I'd see if there'd be any interest within the community. I've been a pretty solid fan for the last ten or twelve years (casual before that), and I'd enjoy discussing his eclectic catalog with like-minded individuals. There are other artists that I like at least as much (perhaps more), but he's the only one with such an extensive discography and a (mysteriously) enormous fan-base. I also keep fairly up to date with the latest in Prince news, so it might be a good spot for casual fans who would like to know more.

Any thoughts?

Really appreciate his music although I don't think I own any albums.

He has a strange relationship with the record industry and fellow musicians and seems an interesting and extremely eclectic person.

An odd tidbit- he's the only artist to refuse allowing Wierd Al to parody his music.

Another odd tidbit- the comedianne Sarah Bernhard covered his song "Little Red Corvette" on one of her comedy releases.

Another tidbit- Vanity, a prince protege, later gave up her acting and singing career after a near death experience. She became a born-again Christian, and struggles with health issues stemming from heavy drug use when she was known as Vanity, including a crack cocaine addiction. Suffering from kidney failure, she underwent a kidney transplant but still requires a heavy dialysis regimine.

And another- Prince started his career as guitarist and occasional songwriter for the band 94 East, which was formed in 1975 and lasted until 1979.

Another- Wendy & Lisa (Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman) were close friends and both children of fathers who were popular Jazz session musicians. They played with Prince as members of the Revolution until internal conflict between the two women and Prince became vocal, over the ladies feeling they were not getting deserved credit in the musical projects. Also, conflict over Prince bringing in members to the Revolution that were not in the traditional sense "musicians" added even more frustration for Wendy and Lisa. Feeling betrayed, Prince broke up the Revolution in 1986.

I have a few of his recordings and I enjoy his different styles; I also appreciate the fact that not only are Prince and his fellow musicians talented, but they never rested on their laurels. He continued to evolve as a musicians and thus his albums aren't all clones of each other.

I have 6 of his albums on vinyl he is no doubt very talented and I think anyone who thinks they dont like him probably hasnt explored his music enough to actually know what they are talking about, radio isnt even a good indicator of what his music is like as it is so varied.
That being said I dont see me being in a club, I am just a fan!

Sure, I started listening to his music early in HS. I graduated in '84 and while at BT later that summer the movie Purple Rain was released. :thmbsp:

Regards,
TB

I only have one Prince CD. You'll not find a more open minded, eclectic group of vinyl lovers anywhere else. Lots of people here interested...

I've only got one of his albums (actually soundtrack--Purple Rain) and casually listen to his stuff once in awhile. While I'm not a big enough fan to want to be part of a club, I recognize his genius.

Crazy to think he's 52 years old, eh?

Or that Purple Rain came out 26 years ago.

Now I wanna listen to some stuff of his....

Very talented individual. Like his music. I was just out of high school when the movie was released as well. It was major crossover music and the ladies loved that stuff. My favorite part of the movie is when Morris Day is laying the BS on Apollonia and Prince comes out and sings "The Beautiful Ones" and Morris is left holding the bottle.

i don`t. talent or no talent, a strange character. not sure if he`s made a decision about being a girl or a boy. :scratch2:

And his "questionable" sexuality has what, exactly, to do with his music? Never mind the fact he's a known father and has bedded scores and scores of females but no mention of him involved, to my knowledge, with any males?

May I further call you out on this absurd comment?

Capt. Howdy is a song by a cross-dressing heavy metal band named "Twisted Sister", fronted by a lead named "Dee", and all in full make-up and pink accentuated clothing modified/borrowed from the big and tall women's section, including fish net stockings and garter belts?

And to play fair, Dee is straight, and what effect did his lipstick or stilletto high heel boots and pink scarves have on his music, exactly?

:thmbsp: you tell him paul!

I only have a couple of his albums, but like what I know of him. In fact, I just listened to 1999 this morning. I think I could use some exposure to more of his music, however.

As to his androgynous nature, big whoop. Two of my favorites, Bowie and Jagger, have both shown their feminine side from time to time.

No offense meant to Capt. Howdy.

But Dee Snyder/Twisted Sister is cool in my book. Listening to Elton John and Freddie Mercury didn't change my sexual preferences in my tender "growing up" years. Despite their choices, I still like women. ???

And even Bowie's bisexuality didn't have an effect on me.

I much preferred looking at Joan Jett at the time. Nowadays, Karen O, Chan Marshal (Cat Power), and Neko Case.

Point? I don't care what folk do in their bedroom. I only care about what goes on in mine. :)

I LOVE Prince. He's amazing. And a little different. And a little dirty. And he's great SNL material. He is the new 'hardest workin' man in show business'. He's always busy.

IF you don't have his new-as-of-last-year 3-CD set (Lotusflow3r), go to Target and buy it for $12. All three CDs are very good, with lots of nasty guitar work and funkyness.
