How necessary is a separate phono preamp?

Yeah, the EAR unit that was compared used a special power cord. The Acrux is immune to such issues as it has immense power supply rejection and is essentially immune to loading etc.- something that designs like the EAR lack. Of course, such a design allows for unlimited tweaking of the sound, which is something that many audiophiles apparently crave, and I've been guilty of that in the past, so I fully understand the attraction.
