You can go as thick as you want. 2/0AWG, FTW!
From an electrical theory standpoint, unless your current wires are grossly undersized, up-sizing will yield no quantifiable results within the reasonable size range. I'd drop one size on the wire, and then focus on quality wire and connectors.

Thanks for the reply and excuse my ignorance but drop 1 size from what? From current wire?
I actually didn't tell the whole story. I don't have the stock cable as it is. But a recent problem with my premium cable that I paid dearly for on ebay made me open it up and I was surprised to see a thin cable. Though after thinking about it I assume the stock is even thinner. But in any case it triggered the question because I thought of replacing what I thought was a bad cable. It turns out it isn't bad and that I am still an idiot and will now have about a foot less on my 10 foot cable but that's another story.
