How to Handle Telemarketers...........

Tom mabe is the best at this stuff !

caller ID

I know, I use the same thing. Tom, on the other hand, is waiting like a panther to pounce on his prey. It's what you call the 'gotcha syndrome' (ok TM, you're going to waste my time, I'm going to waste yours and make you sweat). Or as some would say, I'm going to call you, and raise you one. :D

My father in law has a sicko friend that does the following (if it's a female telemarketer....I guess it could work if it was a guy also):

guy: hello
tm: hi, may I speak to x
guy: this is him
tm: goes into her speil
guy: let's her go into her speil
guy: (after some time) my, you have a lovely voice, ever think about doing some work with it?
tm: why, thank you....no not really
guy: gosh, I can't get over how sexy your voice sounds. Listen, don't you even think about what I'm doing over here on this end....just continue talking please (moans).
tm: click

BTW, that Tom Mabe clip is a true classic! Cracks me up every time I listen.

The no call list thingy...does not work!!! I know these people are just trying to make a living, but I get the same people calling for the same thing. Telling them to take me off the list as I am "NOT INTERESTYED" does not work either.

Here's what I do

Telemarketer: ''Hello I'm calling from''....
Me: '' Hold on my wife handles these things...HONEY.....Just a minute my wife will be with you''........I put the phone under the cushion and check it in 5 minutes or so. If they are still there?.....''HONEY....just a minute she will be right with you''.....This usually gets them to take me off the list also.

Or if I want to make it quick I say..."sure just give me your home phone # and what time you eat dinner and I'll give you a call.

Yeah the pause before anyone answers your "hello" is a dead giveaway..thats thier automated calling machine recognizing a live call and transfering it to someone...personally i just hang up,i figure they're trying to make a living, they're used to it,and they can get to the next prospect that might pan out quicker by not engaging in a conversation that's just wasted time for both of us

I guess I'm a softie....I say "No, thank you - have a great evening!" and then hang up.

That is my usual response too, I try to remember that the person on the other end is just making a living and probably doesn't want to be in the situation any more than I do.

One great way to prevent the calls though, I got a new phone number when I moved here (Vonage VoIP with an american number) and my wife and I made a pact to never give the number to company that didn't absolutley need it. We give a fake number to anywhere that we suspect will sell our info. In a little over a year we have had 2 telemarketing calls vs 5 or 6 a day on our old number.

In my state you can be fined some serious dough for calling people who are on the list. It's actually happened. All one has to do is threaten to call the Attorney General's office and they run screaming. But we hardly get any calls anymore. Except for the charities and political robodialers, which were exempted. :thumbsdn:

Actually this "do not call list" is a federal mandate. If you can get the phone # of the telemarketing co. that calls you, even though you are on the do not call list, they can be made to pay some hefty fines!

Well I hope you are right. I live in Virginia, and my phone's caller ID has the same company calling me 3-5 times a week. They are for the most part recordings though. And what do you do about the ones that come up unlisted caller. It seems to me that if you are on the list, and the list is available to these marketers, AND they know there is a fine they wouldn't do it right? Every company (regardless of what they are selling etc..) finds a way around the rules somehow. I seem to get more calls than ever since I went on the NO CALL LIST. Why do I have to take further action since I'm already on "the list" Off the point a little. I have no trust in consumer protection agencies. I joined Verizon FIOS and it has been a nightmare. I was downright lied to. Verizon does not care. The Virginia Consumer Affairs agency can't do anything to verizon. Verizon knows it . It's a very bad joke. By the way if a Verizon person comes to your door and promises you all kinds of things, according to Verizon they are NOT RESPONIBLE FOR WHAT THEIR CONTRACTED DOOR TO DOOR SALESPEOPLE TELL YOU!!!!!! Sign the dotted line though and they got you by the ba*ls.
